U of M-Flint considers athletic programs
FLINT — The University of Michigan-Flint is weighing the possibility of creating an expanded athletic program in the near future.
“The time is right to engage in a serious analysis of bringing intercollegiate sports to the University of Michigan-Flint, aimed at scholar-athletes,” said Interim Chancellor Jack Kay.
A newly-appointed Blue Ribbon Athletic Commission comprised of faculty, students, staff, alumni and community members will consider the idea over the next few months. Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Duncan Beagle and auto dealership president William Golling are co-chairing the commission.
In addition to engaging the university’s students, Golling hopes the program will bring other benefits to the area.
The university has hired a consulting firm with extensive experience studying intercollegiate athletics to work with the BRAC. The groups will work together to develop a formal recommendation for the university this fall. — A.S.
