GRAND BLANC — Sasha Burau and Michael Coriasso will be playing at the next level as both golf stars have signed national letters of intent with their respective schools. After considering five different schools, Burau, daughter of Mary and Bradley Burau, will be headed to Hope College where she will major in pre-dental, while Coriasso will play for the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University and major in business. Coriasso chose OU over Detroit Mercy because he liked the campus and knew some of the players already on the team.
Burau is a three-sport athlete participating in golf, tennis and skiing, where she was on the varsity tennis team all four years. She has earned ten varsity letters and is also a member of the National Honor Society. Burau is also a standout in the classroom with an impressive 3.826 GPA.
Burau was part of the 2007 state championship team for golf and earned Second Team All-Big Nine honors. “That year was so much fun, we knew we had the team to win it all ... and we did,” said Burau. She was voted most improved player her senior year and has been on the varsity since she was a freshman.
Burau has showed her coaches what a leader is all about as she was named captain of the tennis team her senior year. Burau’s ability to manage school along with being a three-sport athlete, and working a part-time job with her brother will help her tackle the new challenges she will face at the college level. “I’m really excited to play for Hope, they have a good program and nice facilities,” said Burau.
Coriasso, the son of Ron and Kathy Coriasso, has been on the varsity for all four years and was part of the 2004-05 state championship team.
“I learned a lot from the guys on that team,” said Coriasso. “My older brother was on that team and they all kind of showed me the ropes for the upcoming seasons,” he added. Coriasso was also voted to the All Big Nine First Team 2005-06 through 2007-08. In 2006 he was the medalist at regionals and like Burau is also a success in the classroom with a 3.49 GPA and has earned All-Academic throughout high school.
Coriasso and Burau have played golf together and have been friends all during school, with both parents being members of Warwick Hills.
“Sasha’s a really good player and a very nice person ... I’m really happy for her,” said Coriasso.
Sasha added that Mike is an incredible athlete to watch at times and she’s never seen a high school golfer with as much focus and determination on the course. Both star athletes contribute their success to the coaches and parents who have pushed them to always improve as both students and athletes.
