And the winner is ...

The winner of the 50th Buick Open is veteran Kenny Perry. Mr. Perry became the oldest player to win the Buick Open at Warwick Hills. Kenny also won the Buick Open back in 2001, and this was Perry’s 11th win on the PGA Tour.

Kenny shot a six-under-par for the day and was 19-under for the tournament. Kenny needs to send a thank you card to Woody Austin, who blew the tournament by posting consecutive bogeys the last two holes. Woody just couldn’t close the deal on 17 or 18. Bubba Watson missed a 12-footer that could have forced a playoff, so Kenny Perry survived and took home the hardware. The Buick Open fans at Warwick Hills missed Tiger Woods, but they didn’t miss top-notch PGA Golfers putting on a tremendous show.

The Women’s Open was pretty interesting over the weekend. The youngest player ever to win the Open was Inbee Park, who is just two weeks shy of her 20th birthday. Park was the only golfer in the last nine groups to shoot under par for the day. Saturday afternoon I kept flipping channels between the Buick Open and the Women’s Open. I must admit I hardly ever watch women’s golf, but Saturday’s action on the golf course was very entertaining. It would have been better if Annika Sorenstam was near the leader board, but she wasn’t. Between the two golf matches, I didn’t have to endure any commercials, which was awesome. We need more golf on two channels at the same time, in my opinion.

.500 ball
Finally! Five hundred baseball in the Motor City has arrived. Yes, as of Sunday night, the Detroit Tigers were one game over .500 at 41-40. Holy cow, it took three months of the baseball season to reach .500. No one who follows baseball thought the Tigers would be under .500 for three months. Will Detroit stay over .500 is the (million dollar payroll) question? Numerous experts who wanted to bury Detroit two months ago are singing a different tune now. Oh, Detroit will win the division, are the words I’m hearing every morning on my way to work. They have too much talent and the pitching is coming around. There is a reason the baseball season is 162 games a year. Believe me, no championship has ever been won in April, May, or June. Just ask the Colorado Rockies from last season. Sure, I have been hard on the Tigers all spring, but I didn’t say they were done; they were on life support, though.

So, all the experts just need to shut up about the Tigers and stay off the bandwagon now that it is starting to roll. I can jump on because I’m a life-long Tiger fan — I’ve been grandfathered in. I truly feel the next two weeks are critical to this Tiger ball club. In the next 13 games, seven are against the second-place Twins (hottest team in the Majors). Detroit needs to overtake the Twins for second place. It is easier to chase one team — the White Sox — than to chase the Sox and Twinkies both.

Face the facts, the Tigers have stunk in games against division foes. That ship needs to be turned around, and fast. Winning games in your division is a must when you play them 18 or 19 games a season. The Tigers are rolling and should keep rolling the rest of the season. Better watch out Minny Ha Ha and White Socks, the Tigers are in the rear-view mirror and coming fast.
