GOODRICH — In the six team Genesee Area Conference-Red, the Martians stand undefeated after six league contests with an 8-0 defeat of Montrose Tuesday.
“We’ve played everyone in the conference and we are stand alone in first,” said coach Evan Huizenga. “One reason for that is our goal keeping has been very good this season. We’ve split time almost fifty-fifty between Chad Frownfelter and Caleb Jones.”
Kevin Hergenreder, Danny Leppek and Colin Angle scored two goals each to lead the scoring, followed by Nick Arnold and Bobby Short with one goal a piece.
“I expect the team to continue to learn together and work together to achieve the goals that they have set together,” said Huizenga. “We’re entering the second half of the season and we’re anticipating a strong entry into the postseason. The harder we work, the farther we’ll go.”
Last Wednesday Goodrich hosted St. Mary’s Prep School, winning 9-1.
“We played very solid as a team by playing selfless and always looking for the team opportunity and not the individual opportunities,” said Huizenga. “There was not much more that the team could have done to improve in that contest.”
Offensively, the Martians were led by Bobby Short with three goals and an assist, Nick Arnold scored twice and Alex Chambers added a goal and an assist.
“St. Mary’s is a very young side as this is their first full season in 21 years. Once they get a few years of experience, they will be a strong side,” Huizenga said. “I don’t think we’ll have an MVP this season. We’re a team and that is the bottom line. You win as a team, you lose as a team.”
Other offensive contributors include Andrew Patrick, Brandon DeGrouchy and Chase Bertrand with one goal each, followed by Angle, Matt Palm and Ryan Eskuri, all of whom had an assist.
The Martians are 9-1-1 overall, 6-0 conference and could keep that win streak going with a win over LakeVille today.

GRAND BLANC
In a game that saw no first- half scoring, the Bobcats got a 2-1 victory over Flint Powers last Tuesday to stay undefeated in conference play.
Martin Spees opened the scoring for Grand Blanc on an assist from Carter Brochu, which was quickly neutralized when Powers was awarded a penalty kick and converted on their second try.
“The assistant referee stated goalie Kyle Huber encroached before the shot was taken, which hit the crossbar,” said coach Greg Kehler.
The second Bobcat goal came unassisted from Andrew Stuckwisch with about three minutes remaining.
At Rochester Hills Stoney Creek last Saturday, Grand Blanc lost, 3-2.
“Rochester scored a goal with five minutes left in the contest to break the tie,” said Kehler. “One of the things we need to work on is transition defense, and their two goals were a direct result of that. Our midfield is late getting back to help, and the good teams exploit that and score goals.”
Offensively, Vince McKeoun scored twice for the Bobcats and Greg Jannakos added an assist. Other contributors include Corey Cunningham with 11 saves.
“From an offensive standpoint, we were able to put pressure on their defenders and goalkeeper’s in both matches. We now have to finish the chance’s we get,” Kehler said. “Defensively, we need to tighten down more especially in transition.”
Last Thursday against Rochester Adams, Grand Blanc was shut out, 2-0.
“They came out strong and scored a goal seven minutes into the contest when we turned the ball over in our defensive third,” said Kehler. “Just three minutes later Martin Spees fired a shot from 25 yards out that Adam’s goalie made a diving save on that would have tied the game.”
Adams’ second goal came as the result of a penalty kick at the 25 minute mark.
“The unfortunate advantage was, the foul occurred wide of the penalty area, which was a serving ball, and not a foul in front of the goal, and it was close enough to being outside the box as well,” Kehler said. “Regardless, it was another time when we turned the ball over and put our defenders at risk.”
While no more scoring occurred, the rest of the match was fast paced with plenty of action at both ends, including several key saves made by the Adams goalie on shots from Ryan Keener and Vince McKeoun.
“Greg Jannakos and Vince McKeoun had great opportunities in the second half. Greg was stopped by the Adams keeper and Vince put his off the crossbar,” said Kehler.
The Bobcats are 7-4 overall, 6-0 conference. They next play Oct. 1 at Davison.
