GB Outdoors 1/17/2008[Jan. 17, 2008] EAST LANSING — Perhaps the escalating gas prices are forcing some to seek other forms of horsepower — literally.
A multi-agency comprehensive horse study that has not been conducted since 1996 shows that the state’s horse population has grown by nearly 20 percent.
GB Outdoors 1/3/2008[Jan. 3, 2008] STATEWIDE — It was early winter, and Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Technician Brad Johnson of Baraga was taking part in an aerial survey over Keweenaw Bay looking for wolf tracks when he noticed a large dark area in the middle of the frozen bay. But Johnson’s focus was on his wolf research, so he didn’t give the ice much thought.
Preliminary deer numbers show slight decline[Dec. 20, 2007] Hunters appeared to have better luck in the Upper Peninsula, where harvest numbers were up six percent compared to last season. An estimated 36,000 deer were taken by hunters on the other side of the bridge this season, compared to 34,000 last year.
In the northern and southern sectors of the Lower Peninsula harvest numbers were also down six percent compared to last season. This year, 78,000 were taken in the northern LP and 135,000 in the southern LP.
GB Outdoors 12/13/2007[Dec. 13, 2007] GRAND BLANC — Flint Bowmen Archery Club, located on Belsay Road in Grand Blanc, played host to area women for a Ladies Instructional Class Dec. 1.
Mark Salsgiver was the lead instructor for the night, with several members of the club, also certified archery instructors, helping run the event.
The class, offered several times a year, gives women a pressure-free environment to either learn the basics of target archery or to hone their skills so they can participate in leagues and competitions.
Sledders avoid trail shutdowns[Dec. 6, 2007] STATEWIDE —Thanks to a last-minute agreement between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the trail grooming clubs across the state, trails were set to open Dec. 1.
Michigan ski areas make improvements[Nov. 29, 2007] STATEWIDE — Alpine Valley (White Lake) has expanded its snowmaking capacity by adding more snow guns. When ski areas in the Midwest add snowmaking capacity it generally allows them to make more snow at marginal temperatures so they can open earlier and to provide more depth to their bases. ww.skialpinevalley.com or 248-887-2180
Savving the best for last[Nov. 23, 2007] DAVISON — Genesee County hunters followed sage advice and stayed in the woods later during the opening day of the firearm deer season last Thursday. To prove that out, one lone big buck was on display at Church and Sons Auto Repair at the ninth annual buck pole.
