Safety certification bonanza
DAVISON — Thanks to a partnership with the Burton Parks and Rec Dept. and the DNR’s Law Enforcement Division, young people can take part in earning four safety certifications through the third annual Michigan Outdoor Recreational Safety weekend.
Williams Gunsight and Outfitters will play host to the event July 19-20 at 7389 Lapeer Rd. in Davison. Registration is ongoing and open to any youth wishing to become certified in hunter safety, snowmobile, off-road vehicle or boating safety.
Attendees and their parents must attend a mandatory registration session and course on first aid, survival and ethics on Wednesday, June 25, at Williams. The free two-day program begins daily at 7:45 a.m., and all materials will be provided. No personal weapons may be brought by students. Kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult for all classes, which are limited to 60 students.
To register, call Burton Parks and Rec at 810-743-1500, ext. 264, by June 23 at 4:30 p.m.
Report all dead fish
STATEWIDE — Michigan DNR Fisheries Division is asking for the public’s help in reporting all large or unusual fish kills after viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) was discovered in the Wisconsin waters of Lake Michigan and in lakes in Ohio.
VHS is a viral disease in fish that causes death by internal bleeding. It was first confirmed in Michigan fish in 2005. Cases have been reported in Lake Huron, the St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie.
Although the DNR does not want single incidences of dead fish reported, it does want to hear from anyone who comes across significant numbers of dead or dying fish. Report cases to 517-373-1280.
