After an historic journey that lasted 91 holes and five days, the world’s best golfer, Tiger Woods, needs some time off. Who can blame the guy? Just three days ago, he won by a mere stroke over No. 158-ranked Rocco Mediate on a nine-week old surgically repaired left knee in perhaps the best-ever golf duel that was nothing more than spectacular.
Now, Buick Open officials and golf fans are wondering if the rumors that are churning are true, that Woods will now bow out of the 50th Buick Open to rest his knee and weary mind. That should be a no-brainer for everyone. Odds are that he will indeed skip the tournament, but possibly not the clinic and festivities leading up to the tournament play.
Woods is slated to be at the first tee next Wednesday at 11 a.m., with 1958 champ Billy Casper, 2007 champ Brian Bateman and PGA officials and other dignitaries to commemorate the golden anniversary of the Open that has been held at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club since 1958. At 3 p.m., he is committed to host the first-ever golf clinic held in a baseball park at Comerica Park. As Buick’s official spokesperson through 2010 when his contract expires, Woods will likely hold up his end of these agreements. As far as the golf, after his recent accomplishment, Buick officials should set Woods, his caddie Stevie and their close personal friends up at No. 17 with a prime seat and all the food and beverage he desires. For that matter, Casper may just join him as one of his biggest fans. What a sight that would be, and what a draw for fans.
For any fans who want to start whining about Woods’ withdrawal from the tournament, cheese and crackers will be served in the clubhouse. Any loyal golf fan should get themselves to the course bright and early Wednesday, the last day fans can bring a camera inside the grounds, and take advantage of the historic photo ops and spoken words that will also likely be recorded for history. Bring your hats, tee flags and white shirts, along with your favorite color Sharpie and don’t miss out just because Tiger might not play.
This is one of the premier golf events to hit the area, and with just two more years on the current contract, likely will be the last we see of golfers of this caliber for a while. Rumors continue to fly that point south to Oakland Hills for future Buick Opens. PGA Officials are not saying a word, but the Buick Gala was moved to the Ren Cen this year in hopes of tapping bigger wallets, and with the Senior PGA tournament coming to Oakland, speculation is that Buick will move to a new market area. Only time will tell on that matter, but anyone who chooses to skip the Buick Open this year will be making a bad decision.
Set aside Tiger, Casper and Bateman for a minute. With Jim Furyk, Woody Austin, Tom Pernice, Boo Weekly, Billy Mayfair and Scott Verplank on the greens, golf fans and autograph seekers alike will not want to miss the opportunity to get up-close to their favorite golfers. John Daly was granted an exemption this week, and as a fan favorite will likely draw his own large gallery, as he has in years past. It alos seems likely that it will be a lot easier to get Tiger’s autograph if he isn’t concentrating on the golf.
