GRAND BLANC — An 1860s style base ball game will take to the practice football field at Grand Blanc High School Sun. Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. featuring Grand Blanc’s own Thrashers and the Saginaw Old Golds. Admission is free and open to the public.
In its previous two contests, the Thrashers have taken on the Rochester Grangers in a game of gentleman’s ball. A re-match will take place Aug. 23 in Bridgeport as part of the Bridgeport Days.
The old-style came is played using rules of the period and players wear the full authentic uniform that includes long woolen pants and long sleeved white shirts and suspenders. A cotton base ball cap is worn and balls are caught bare handed. The game is full of gentlemanly conduct with mutual respect and encouragement among players, and even between teams. Every toss of the ball from the ballist (pitcher) is preceded with “strike well, sir”. And every hit is followed by, “well struck, sir”.
Cranks (fans) are encouraged to dress in period garb to cheer on both teams and lemonade and popcorn are usually available for sale. Each team introduces itself player by player, with a respectful tipping of the hat from the players. That is preceded by a barbershop quartet singing an anthem through small paper megaphones.
A top city official, such as the mayor, acts as an umpire, but does not track the score. He is plainly visible in top hat and vest, complete with walking stick. It’s an honored position that commands respect. Tallyists, generally key female members of the community, dress in long dresses, shawls and gloves, and they keep the score for both sides. Several Grand Blanc coaches and administrators also play for the Thrashers and include football coach Joe Delaney and baseball coach JD Wheeler.
Last year, more than 150 people turned out, despite constant rain that cleared up just before the game, says Dan Harrett of the Grand Blanc Heritage Association. Details: GBHA at 810-694-7274. — L.P.
