Weber wins Dave
Schultz award
GOODRICH — Mark Weber, a senior grappler at Goodrich High and soon-to-be freshman at U-M, won the prestigious Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award for the state of Michigan.
Each year 49 high school seniors are chosen by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum based on their wrestling, scholastic achievement, character, citizenship and community service. Named for Olympic and World Champion Dave Schultz, a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, the award has been bestowed upon the nation’s top wrestlers since 1996 and to date has recognized 530 student athletes.
Weber will now head to a national leadership camp, all expenses paid, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, June 18-21. USA Wrestling, the sport’s governing body, will host the camp that will offer the award honorees instructional training with USOTC freestyle and Greco-Roman national coaches and wrestlers. Other experts will school the athletes in sports psychology, strength and conditioning, nutrition, leadership development and public speaking.
A key component of the camp is the requirement that once back home, each honoree speaks to at-risk youth in their communities about the benefits of extra-curricular activities and athletics. — L.P.
