Season over for Woods
GRAND BLANC — PGA pro Tiger Woods announced last Wednesday that his season is over because of a double stress fracture of his left shin and torn ligaments in his recently repaired left knee.

Woods underwent surgery April 15, the second on his left knee, but was noticeably hampered at the June U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego, his first tournament since the surgery.

“Now, it is clear that the right thing to do is to listen to my doctors, follow through with this surgery and focus my attention on rehabilitating my knee,” Woods said in a statement.

Buick Open officials are naturally disappointed, but more concerned about the health of their spokesperson and No. 1-ranked golfer. Woods cancelled his first-of-its-kind golf clinic that was to take place at Comerica Park this past Tuesday, and will skip all ceremonial commitments surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Buick Open at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club that begins Monday, June 23.

“We are disappointed that the clinic had to be cancelled, but we wish Tiger the best during his rehabilitation process,” said Larry Peck, Buick Golf Promotions Manager. “We encourage everyone who purchased the clinic package to come out and enjoy a great tournament at Warwick Hills next week.”

All tickets for the clinic portion of the package will be refunded in full if bought via phone or internet. Tickets purchased at Comerica Park have to be returned for refund to Comerica Park Box Office, Golf Clinic Refund, 2100 Woodward Ave., Detroit 48201. The entry into the Buick Open that was part of that ticket package is still valid.

Former champs Jim Furyk, Justin Leonard, Woody Austin, Kenny Perry, Rocco Mediate, Tom Pernice Jr., Scott Verplank, Brian Bateman and Billy Mayfair have committed to play. John Daly, Chris DiMarco, Fred Funk, J.B. Holmes and Charles Howell III are also slated to play. — L.P.
