Goodrich athlete signs with Michigan
GOODRICH — After a storied career that includes three consecutive state titles, Goodrich senior Mark Weber signed his national letter of intent to compete for the University of Michigan’s wrestling team Monday.
“It’s a great school and I want to be a part of their legacy. I’m honored to go there and up for the challenge,” said Weber. “I liked Ann Arbor. The feeling of it is really big. I also really liked the coaches and guys on the team.”
Weber, who will major in kinesiology, was surrounded by friends and family at the signing, including his mother and father, current coach Matt Turnbow, cousin and former coach Kenneth Sirignano and sister C.C., who also competes for the Martian wrestling squad and was just the sixth area female wrestler to make it to the state meet, finishing 40-7 overall last season.
“It’s been a dream of mine to go to a school in the Big 10. I’ve wanted to wrestle in college since I was a little kid,” Weber said. “Being a wrestler makes me very disciplined. Because of it, I work harder and stay out of trouble.”
In last seasons Div. 3 state finals at the palace of Auburn Hills, Weber, a three-time state champ, finished at 57-1.
“He’s been instrumental to the success of the program. The other kids see what he puts in and it’s made our whole team better,” said Turnbow. “He’s real coachable, which is one of the best qualities a top athlete can have. He’s just got a real good attitude.”
Turnbow added, “He’s just a real down to earth guy who doesn’t take life too seriously but is determined to be successful at whatever he does. He’s done a good job as a leader by example with his work ethic.” — M.S.
