Local golfer shoots pair of holes-in-one
GRAND BLANC TWP. — Dick Weiermiller may not have won a car at the famed No. 17 at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club, but he did manage to do what none of the pros could by shooting a hole-in-one April 18.
“I got it on my wife’s birthday,” Weiermiller said. “I used a 7-iron and it went 133 yards. It was a beautiful shot, bounced once and went right in. The car was not on the water that day as it is always during the Buick Open where the vehicle goes to anyone hitting a hole-in-one.”
Weiermiller noted that he’s usually just happy to get on the green. Making the day more special was the fact that his 93-year-old father was up visiting him and watching.
“He passed just a few weeks ago and he got more excited than anyone,” Weiermiller said.
Weiermiller’s second hole-in-one came on May 20, the day after his birthday.
“It was a little different, a hazy, rainy evening at 6 p.m. It was on No. 3 and a 170-yard shot. I thought it was a good hit, but couldn’t see it from weather, thought it was in the sand trap. We couldn’t find it, looked around the green, looked in the trap, and looked past the trap in deep grass and finally someone said, ‘Did anyone look in the hole?’ He went over and said ‘Oh my god, look in here!’ Weiermiller added. “That’s my second one in little over a month. The odds of that are just astronomical.”
A 50-year golfer, Weiermiller said the closest he had ever gotten is about four feet.
“There is a lot of luck involved and when you play like I do, just getting on the green is a feat. Occasionally, you hit a sweet spot and get lucky. You can all dream. It was special that it was before the Buick Open and we could sit and watch everyone and say, ‘Come on, we know it can be done. Get that car,’” Weiermiller joked. — L.P.
