GRAND BLANC — Billy McKay Jr., a former three-year letterman at Grand Blanc High School, placed second at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier at Boyne Highlands Resort and Golf Course July 26.
His scores of 71 and 68 left him at five under, just one shot behind the leader and University of Michigan teammate Bill Rankin.
“We had to play 36 but it was great. I ended up making some clutch putts at the end,” said McKay. “It’s always fun. This was just a little longer than usual.”
The U.S. Amateur will take place at the Olympic Club ocean course in San Francisco Aug. 20-27.
“I’m excited to play in such a prestigious event,” McKay said. “Everybody’s got to play the same course. I’m sure I’ll get used to it.”
McKay just finished his freshman year for the U-M golf team, where he played in nine tournaments last season, starting seven. He was the youngest player ever to qualify for the Buick Open in 2005. — M.S.
