FLINT — Gabrielle Anzalone, 14, a sophomore on the Grand Blanc cross country team, won the women’s 8K Crim Festival of Races last Saturday with a winning time of 31:37. She was just under four minutes ahead of the second place finisher, Melanie Brender, 15, of Sterling Heights. The win placed Anzalone fourth overall and it was also her fourth summer road race win.
Anzalone’s time in the race last year was 1:05 slower, and considering the hot, humid conditions that had several runners collapsing in the 10K race, she shaved valuable seconds off her time. She also gave the boys a run for their money as she sprinted out to an early 25-yard lead.
The standout freshman that turned heads last season, is in fine shape for the upcoming Grand Blanc High School season that hits the course after the Labor Day holiday.
Anzalone and teammate Alexdria Dawson helped the Lady Bobcats to an undefeated season last year. Anzalone was fourth at the state meet last year in 17:46.6. — L.P.
