ANN ARBOR — The Grand Blanc girls’ water polo squad had a tough road ahead of them as they began the postseason May 9 at Pioneer High School against Ann Arbor Huron, a team ranked fourth in the state and second in the east region at 7-1 as of May 7.
While the Lady Bobcats gave a valiant effort they were simply overmatched, losing, 11-2, in what amounted to the team’s final performance of the 2008 campaign. For the offense, Rachel Bartels and Carly Miller each scored once.
On May 7, Grand Blanc ended the regular season by hosting Troy Athens, winning, 9-2, to end a streak in which they had dropped six of their last seven matches to the combined tune of 45-18.
The Lady Bobcats traveled to Birmingham on May 1 to face Groves, getting edged out, 7-6.
The difference in the contest came in the first quarter, as Groves leapt out to a 2-1 advantage. Grand Blanc answered by outscoring their opponent 3-1 in the second to head into halftime with a 4-3 lead, only to watch Groves take the third by the exact same margin and go up, 6-5.
The two teams then rounded out the scoring by exchanging fourth-quarter goals. For the offense, Kristy Cornell led the way with a hat trick, followed by Miller with two goals and Bartels scored once. Defensively, Alaina Moreno-Kohler and Allison Reilly had six saves each.
On May 3 the junior varsity squad competed in their only tournament of the year at Ann Arbor Pioneer, placing seventh in a 16-team field.
This season’s team was 10-15 overall, 2-5 ER East District. Last year the girls finished at 9-15 overall, 1-7 ER. East District. M.S.
