The Race Is Not Over...

Congratulations to those who won in the city elections, and to their challengers, Mike Byrne (candidate for mayor) and Cathleen Buell (city council candidate) who, despite their losses, managed to get a good number of people to show up at the polls to vote for them.

While I think the city is one of the most civil, efficiently run governments I’ve covered (did I mention that I also cover Burton?), what this election showed is that there are residents who would like some changes — hopefully the city listens, acknowledges those concerns and makes the best decisions that will affect the greatest number of residents.

No matter how well a government is run, however, it needs to be tested regularly and answer its citizens’ concerns — even if only to reaffirm the job the government is doing.

Burton’s council was purged on Tuesday because of residents’ discontent in that community. Enough people in Grand Blanc turned out in this election to give a referendum opinion that they don’t have any major concerns that would call for such an action; while enough still raised counterpoints for the city to address.

In this case, the system worked as it should.

While the candidates and voters may think the election is over, the next cycle has just begun. If elected officials don’t earn the jobs to which they were elected over the next four years, they can expect to face a challenging scenario again. It’s also the duty of residents to go to council meetings, write letters and emails, make phone calls or stand on the front lawn of city hall with a big sign to make sure officials are hearing residents’ concerns.

It’s not the elected officials’ responsibility to seek you out — it’s your responsibility to make sure your voices are heard. If you don’t, you have little to complain about when the officials make decisions without your input.

Holiday Notice
The holidays are fast approaching and with them those joyful yuletide feelings.
There are many in our county who don’t have some of what most of us consider essential items, let alone the little extras that make the holiday season so special.

If anyone is sponsoring a drive or event to benefit those in our area who need a little extra help during the holidays, send that information to jnewell@viewnewspapers.net.
