The late nineteenth century poet, playwright and novelist Oscar Wilde once said: “I am not young enough to know everything.”
Yep, (as eloquently as I can put it) that pretty much sums us up.
Except, we’re not that old.
With this issue, the Grand Blanc View celebrates its second anniversary — in case you turned directly to this column instead of reading the heading on the top of the front page — of covering, and serving, the citizens of Grand Blanc, Grand Blanc Township, Atlas Township and Goodrich.
Our first issue came out May 5, 2005, but we won’t quibble over a two-day calendar technicality.
Since that time we have done our best to attend as many city and village council meetings, township board and school board meetings, sporting events and other activities as we could in order to cover the community as fairly, accurately and comprehensively as we possible.
Our overriding thought always has been that in order to provide thorough, quality journalism to our readers, we need to be out there at all the activities that our readers embrace, and report back to those who could not attend any given event or meeting.
Too often, the seemingly little things — one of the elementary school’s career days, the pancake fundraiser, the high school play or the badminton team — are left to founder, unreported, in the wake of the city’s decision to cut or raise taxes, the school district’s decision to lay off teachers or the building developments in the community.
While those things are surely of great importance, affecting a multitude of residents, we want to hear, and report, all of the things the community embraces and would like to know more about.
Owner Rick Burrough started this newspaper with the idea that all aspects of the community deserved to be brought to the public’s attention. His endeavors to enlighten citizens about what was happening in their community started with our company’s first paper, the Lapeer Area View in 2003, then the Grand Blanc View in 2005. On March 15 of this year, the company expanded to the Burton area with the Burton View.
Each newspaper has the same goal: provide quality coverage of local government, school, political, social, civic and sporting events.
As I’ve said, we’ve done our best to achieve these goals and will continue to improve during our third year in Grand Blanc. We always welcome input from the community and hope all of you will let us know how we can better represent the community.
