Someone’s always watching ...
[Aug. 9, 2007] Call it a love of privacy rights or the disdain at having Big Brother look over my shoulder, there’s something in me that becomes suspicious when an institution of authority adopts policies that give them the power to monitor others. By Jim Newell

Power-less night sheds light into what I could be missing
[Jul. 26, 2007] An old proverb says; “a man in his twenties who is not liberal in his views is jaded (actually, I think it was “cynical,” but I prefer jaded), and a man in his thirties who is not conservative in his views is irresponsible.”
Or some drivel along those lines. By Jim Newell

The chorus is building
[Jul. 19, 2007] Loyalty to petrified opinion never yet broke a chain or freed a human soul, and never will. — Mark Twain

While most people spend Sunday afternoons relaxing with family and friends, a small but faithful group of people spend that time in a not-so-quiet vigil, of sorts. By Jim Newell

Man vs. Wild, or Man vs. Bureaucracy
[Jul. 12, 2007] My new favorite show is Man vs. Wild on the Discovery Channel, airing Friday nights at 9 p.m.
Host Bear Grylls, a former member of the British Special Forces and survivalist, teaches people firsthand how to survive if stranded in various locations around the globe that would make many people say, “Well, I might as just sit here and wait it out.” By Jim Newell

Township road improvement proposal is worth a look
[Jul. 5, 2007] Grand Blanc Township government is working on a roads and pathways proposal that the board and voters should take the time to fully explore before deciding against the plan, which could include a request for 1.5 mills from township residents.

Village ‘Detachment’ is certainly interesting
[Jun. 28, 2007] An old proverb says, “May you live in interesting times.”

State is broke: politicians need to be at the Capitol, not on Mackinac
[Jun. 21, 2007] Whoa, I thought I was hardcore when it came to holding our elected officials accountable for the messes they create. By Jim Newell

Goodrich teacher's contract resolution in sight
[Jun. 14, 2007] I was just informed two days ago that the Goodrich School District and the teachers’ union, the Goodrich Education Association (GEA), have reached a tentative contract agreement.
The teachers are scheduled to vote this Friday on whether to accept the proposal, and the Board of Education will discuss the contract during its meeting on Monday, Supt. Kimberley Hart said. By Jim Newell

‘The Issue ...’
[Jun. 7, 2007] I’ve held off as long as I could, but the rash (and this is good thing — I favor as much input on a topic as possible) of liturgies on “the issue” has compelled me to break my silence, even though I may be squashed. By Jim Newell

It’s about life ...
[May 31, 2007] The Grand Blanc Relay for Life is this weekend, and if you have the time I would recommend stopping by to show your support for those who have battled and survived cancer, and to remember those who have been lost to the disease. By Jim Newell

War is hell, but never forget to say ‘thank you’
[May 24, 2007] I grew up watching John Wayne and Audie Murphy movies, with a little Jimmy Cagney thrown in just to make sure I knew what it meant to be an American. By Jim Newell

Village raises are fair
[May 17, 2007] In a heated discussion between the council members and the audience, the Goodrich Village Council voted Monday to essentially freeze employees’ wages, at least until October, when the council will review the issue. By Jim Newell

Let's hope school elections bring results
[May 10, 2007] The May elections are past, but I’m sure that many people have already seen candidates and special interest groups out canvassing their neighborhoods for the August primary and the November general election. By Jim Newell

Thanks for two great years covering the community
[May 3, 2007] The late nineteenth century poet, playwright and novelist Oscar Wilde once said: “I am not young enough to know everything.”
Yep, (as eloquently as I can put it) that pretty much sums us up.
Except, we’re not that old. By Jim Newell

Not very child-friendly
[Apr. 26, 2007] “The state is broke and isn’t interested in sharing.” By Jim Newell
