GOODRICH — Signs in Goodrich have been an ongoing target for vandals since early summer and vandals struck again Monday morning by defacing signs on Dutch Road.
Ethan Campbell, supervisor for the department of public works, said the vandalism began early in the summer with signs on Ridge Road and Janaroy Court. Later on, the vandals, who tagged the signs with GVS, used silver spray paint to mark stores.
“They keep striking every few weeks,” Campbell said. “Last Friday, they did two signs and a mailbox at Ridge and Janaroy.”
The vandalism that occurred Monday morning consisted of four vandalized signs, including a stop sign and a new children crossing sign. The two other signs were a Village of Goodrich limits sign, which had the “Good” crossed out and replaced with “Hood” and a No Parking sign that had a swastika spray-painted on it, said Campbell.
“The large signs are specially made for the village and are over $100 each,” said Jakki Sidge, village administrator. “They (vandals) are putting lives in danger by writing on the stop, speed and the children at play signs.”
Campbell said he filed a police report with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Dept. on Aug. 18. “I asked them to increase their patrol on Ridge Road,” he said.
Campbell said he noticed the damage after driving around Goodrich, which he does every morning. “At first I thought they (vandals) were on foot, but with it happening on Dutch Road, they are driving around doing this,” he said.
Campbell said he cleaned the signs but when figuring in cost and labor, the total is around $400.
“That (total) consists of a felony charge,” he said. “Whoever is doing this is facing a felony charge. It’s getting ridiculous; these signs are not cheap.”
