New wave crime
GRAND BLANC — Identity theft has been identified as the fastest- growing crime nationwide, causing lawmakers to create new policies to combat it. Carolyn Eaglin from Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox’s office will be in Grand Blanc for a seminar Oct. 19 to discuss new initiatives and ways residents can protect themselves.
The presentation is scheduled from 7-8 p.m. at Kirkridge Presbyterian Church. Answers to issues such as who commits identity theft, protections against it, what, exactly, identity theft is and other important topics are planned for the discussion.
A minimum of 25 people are needed for the presentation to go forward. To register, call 810-694-3321. — P.H.

Brendel
transformed
GRAND BLANC — A lot of work this summer went into transforming the Brendel campus from a sixth-grade transition building into an elementary school.
Among the new features are plants and benches in the entrance area, a courtyard complete with landscaping and a stuffed Brendel bulldog sleeping in the flowers, and a colorful mural in the entrance.
Pine Ridge Farms Miniature Horses and Royal Garden Florists donated the entrance greenery. Landscaper Ted Yachanin, a former Grand Blanc wrestling coach, designed and created the courtyard. The mural was painted by teacher Alisa Andree and self-portrait tiles were created by Brendel students with the help of art teacher Scott Blair. Colony Market provided discounted food during the open house. — P.H.
