Police department accreditation
GRAND BLANC — The City of Grand Blanc Police Dept. had its annual on-site re-accreditation assessment by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) from Aug. 25-29.
CALEA assessor and Deputy Chief of Lake Bluff Police Department David Belmonte, CALEA assessor and Valdosta Police Department Major Brian K. Childress and CALEA assessor and Chief of Police of the Powell Police Department Gary L. Vest conducted the assessment.
The police department first achieved National Accreditation in 1999 and was re-accredited in 2004. The department is one of only seven police departments in the state to be fully accredited. For more information, contact the GBPD at 810-694-1111. — N.B.
Anderson health, safety fair
GRAND BLANC — Anderson Elementary, 5290 Leroy St., hosts a health and safety fair from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 25.
Activities include a smoke house, simulating a real house fire for children to learn about hot doors and see how smoke rises. The Grand Blanc Fire Dept. and township police department will attend, along with representatives from bike, traffic, playground and car seat safety programs. Two bicycles will be raffled off during the event.
Parents can purchase child identification cards. Grand Blanc Tang Soo Do will do a demonstration. Grand Blanc Eyes, Dentistry ETC and other agencies also will attend.

5K run/walk
GRAND BLANC — Genesys Home and Hospice Care hosts its seventh annual 5K Run/Walk Sept. 29 on the Genesys Regional Medical Center Health Park trails. Proceeds go toward renovations of patient rooms at Genesys Hospice Care Center.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Genesys Athletic Club. The 5K Run begins at 10 a.m., followed by the 5K Walk at 10:05 a.m. Ronald McDonald will facilitate a kids’ one-mile fitness run starting at 10:45 a.m. and an indoor kids’ fitness fun run (1/4 mile) at 11 a.m.
The outdoor course runs through the Health Park’s 478 acres of woodlands. The indoor kids’ fitness run will be on the Genesys Athletic Club indoor track.
The top three finishers in each adult age group receive awards and all participants in the kids’ races receive a finisher’s award.

Breast cancer screenings
GENESEE COUNTY — The Genesee County Cancer Connection offers free breast screenings during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
Walk-in screenings are 6-7 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Great Lakes Cancer Institute - McLaren, 4100 Beecher Rd., Flint, and from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 16 at Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute, 302 Kensington Ave., Flint.

Scott announces candidacy for state representative
GRAND BLANC — Paul H. Scott (R-Grand Blanc) will announce his candidacy for state representative in the 51st state house district at 10 a.m. Sept. 15 at Grand Blanc High School.
Scott, a graduate of Grand Blanc, attended the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor for undergraduate and law school. He also attended Harvard University, earning a master’s in public policy. Since 2005, he was worked as deputy director of the Gallup World Poll for the Gallup Organization.
The 51st District includes Grand Blanc, Argentine, Atlas, Fenton and Mundy townships, and the cities of Grand Blanc, Linden and Fenton, and the Village of Goodrich. — N.B.
Community roast beef dinner
GOODRICH — Goodrich United Methodist Church, 8071 S. State Rd., will serve a roast beef dinner for the community on Fridays every month (excluding July and Aug.).
The first dinner is from 4-7 p.m. Sept. 21, with a menu of roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, cole slaw, jello, bread and butter, choice of four pies, coffee, tea and lemonade.
Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children 5-10 and children under 4 are free. Tickets can be purchased at Goodrich UMC in advance or at the door.
