Women’s assault
prevention seminar
GRAND BLANC
— Police Chief Steve Solomon offers a free seminar on assault prevention awareness for women ages 18 and older 6-7 p.m. Aug. 7 at Grand Blanc City Hall, 203 E. Grand Blanc Rd.

Still time to get
absentee ballots
GENESEE COUNTY
— Voters who need an absentee ballot mailed to them for the Aug. 7 primary elections must apply for the ballot by 2 p.m. Aug. 4.
Voters can get an absentee ballot in person through 4 p.m. Aug. 6 at their local clerk’s office. Voters who request a ballot in person on Aug. 6 must vote in the clerk’s office at the time of the request. Emergency absentee ballots are available under “certain conditions through 4 p.m. on the date of the election,” said Sec. of State Terri Lynn Land.
Voters can find out if there is an election in their community by going to the Secretary of State website, www.michigan.gov/sos; or by contacting the Genesee County Clerk’s Office, www.co.genesee.mi.us/clerk or 810-257-3225. The county clerk’s office also lists election results. — J.N.

Goodrich still has openings for out-of-county students
GOODRICH
— Goodrich Area Schools still has four openings available for students who live outside Genesee County but in intermediate school districts contiguous to the Genesee Intermediate School District.
This includes students in Livingston, Shiawassee, Saginaw, Tuscola, Lapeer or Oakland counties.
The Board of Education voted for the first time at its April 23 meeting to allow applications under the schools of choice program from outside Genesee County for the 2007-08 school year.
Applications are available in the superintendent’s office, 8029 S. Gale Rd., for students in grades K-12 and must be returned to the administrative offices no later than 4 p.m. Aug. 10.
If more than four applications are submitted, the district will hold a lottery on Aug. 13. Parents will be notified whether their student was accepted or not by the end of the day Aug. 13.

McLaren diabetes support group
FLINT
— McLaren Diabetes Education Program offers a monthly diabetes support group.
The free sessions are held the second Wednesday of the month in the Diabetes Education Classroom on Five North at McLaren Regional Medical Center, 401 S. Ballenger Hwy.
The next meeting is 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 8 and features guest speaker John A. Waters, MD, FACS. Waters will discuss diabetes and eye conditions associated with the health condition.

No burning permits
GRAND BLANC TWP.
— The fire department is no longer issuing burning permits for Grand Blanc Twp. residents. The department resumes issuing burning permits on Oct. 15 this year through April 30, 2008.
The fire department does not issue burning permits to City of Grand Blanc residents at any time of the year. — J.N.

Kid computers
at GDL
GENESEE COUNTY
— The Genesee District Libraries (GDL) now has computers loaded with a variety of learning games and programs for children.
The Early Literacy computers, which are not hooked to the internet, provide learning experiences for children up to the elementary-school level.
Pre-loaded programs available for use include reading, writing, math, science, social studies, music and art. The colorful computers, each featuring a kid-sized mouse, also provide valuable computer skills for toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners and elementary students.

Giant garage sale

— Holy Redeemer Men’s Club and Council of Catholic Women (CCW) sponsors a “Giant Garage Sale” from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 17-18 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1227 E. Bristol Rd.
The sale features a variety of items including furniture, household goods, books and jewelry. Proceeds from the sale benefit Holy Redeemer Church.
