Children’s Recreation Fund
receives donation
GENESEE COUNTY — The IMA Children’s Recreation Fund received a check for $71,016 on July 31 from the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) Region 1C to support the mission of the Children’s Recreation Fund.
“We are extremely grateful to Region 1C and Mr. (Duane) Zuckschwerdt (director of UAW Region 1C) for this gift,” said Sherlynn Everly, IMA executive director.
The fund provides recreational programs and opportunities for children and families throughout Genesee County, without regard to preferential bias for their natural athletic ability. Children’s Recreation Fund programs include Flint Junior Golf Association, the Greater Flint Baseball/ Softball Commission and after-school and summer programs.

Community fun
day at MCC
FLINT — Mott Community College’s Hispanic Technology & Community Center, in conjunction with the LatinoAmerican Church of Flint, announces its annual community fun day beginning at noon on Aug. 18.
The free event features refreshments, a puppet show, face painting and games. A drawing will be held for two computers and two bicycles.

Free in-home
care seminar
BURTON — Burton Comfort Keepers’ owner Al Jones will teach a free monthly seminar at his Burton location, 4029 Lapeer Rd.
Seminar topics will center on offering in-home care for people with a variety of illnesses. These seminars are open to the public.
Jones, who teaches similar classes at UM-Flint and the Davison and Flushing senior centers, takes the lessons he and his wife Debbie have learned from caring for his ailing mother, and from owning Comfort Keepers, passing that knowledge and understanding along to those who attend the seminars.
The next is at 6 p.m. Aug. 27. The topic will be “Family Caregiving 101,” with Jones offering suggestions for families who wish to care for a family member in their home.
“It is tips and different things they can learn and do themselves and save time and effort that will be the best thing for their loved ones.”

blood drive
FLINT — McLaren Regional Medical Center, Ballenger Auditorium, 401 S. Ballenger Hwy., hosts an American Red Cross blood drive from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Aug. 30.

Petfest for
animal lovers
GRAND BLANC TWP. — Those with a love for animals and a desire to see them go to good homes should attend the second annual “Petfest” at Genesys Regional Medical Center from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 18.
People adopted 66 dogs and cats from Adopt-a-Pet, Citizens for Animal Rescue & Emergency, Last Chance Rescue and Tenth Life Cat Shelter during last year’s event.
“It was so successful that we have added more adoption groups and exhibitors. That means hundreds of animals will be available for adoption and there will be fun things to do. Our goal is to double last year’s figures and bring attention to the homeless animal situation,” said Dawnell Wease, event coordinator.

Army for assistance
GENESEE COUNTY — The Salvation Army of Genesee County has begun a new phone in process for people seeking help.
Individuals in need of assistance will now contact the Salvation Army main office at 810-232-2196 after 9 a.m. Monday through Friday, to schedule an afternoon appointment with a social worker.
Appointment eligibility is based on staff availability and the client’s possessing the appropriate documentation: Dept. of Human Services decision notice, utility shutoff or judgment, proof of all household income, picture identification, social security cards for all adults living in the household, receipts for any bills paid in the last 30 days. — J.N.
