Grand Blanc senior aces ACT
GRAND BLANC — Grand Blanc High School senior Joel Hrit scored a perfect 36 on the American College Test (ACT) this past spring. Hrit is one of nine students in the state to achieve a perfect score.
The ACT is a college entrance test composed of 215 multiple choice questions covering the core subjects of English, math, science and reading.
Joel is the son of Lisa and Tom Hrit of Grand Blanc. He plans to attend an Ivy League college after graduation and major in a math or science-related field. — N.B.

GRAND BLANC — Rachel Langer, a graduate of the Grand Blanc High School Class of 2007, placed fourth in the Medical Laboratory Assisting category during the Health Occupation Student Association (HOSA) Leadership Conference from June 20-23 in Orlando, Fla.
The national HOSA competition included more than 8,000 students from 30 states. Rachel is the daughter of Beverly and Donald Langer. She will attend Mott Community College in the fall to study medical technology. — N.B.

GRAND BLANC — Grand Blanc High School student Zack Castanos was one of 38 students accepted to participate in Kettering University’s AIM program for 2007.
AIM, a five-week residential summer program for students entering twelfth grade in the fall, provides students with college experience. Participants attend college freshmen-level courses Monday-Thursday, studying calculus, chemistry, computer programming, economics, physics and business management.
Kettering University faculty teaches all courses. On Fridays, students tour various Kettering co-op employers to meet professional engineers and business managers.
Harley-Davidson Motor Company sponsored Castanos for the program. — N.B.
Toastmasters elect new officers
GRAND BLANC — Grand Blanc Area Toastmasters Club #6188 recently elected new officers.
Joe Wojciechowski of Ortonville was elected president; David Case of Grand Blanc is vice president of education; Lori Kock of Clarkston is vice president of membership; Robin Riddell of Grand Blanc is vice president of public relations; Teresa Childers of Flint is secretary; Beth McNaney of Grand Blanc is treasurer; and Jan Wilson of Grand Blanc is sergeant at arms.
The mission of the Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communications and leadership skills, which in turn fosters self-confidence and personal growth.

Goodrich still has openings for out-of-county students
GOODRICH — Goodrich Area Schools still has four openings available for students who live outside Genesee County but in intermediate school districts contiguous to the Genesee Intermediate School District.
This includes students in Livingston, Shiawassee, Saginaw, Tuscola, Lapeer or Oakland counties.
The Board of Education voted for the first time at its April 23 meeting to allow applications under the schools of choice program from outside Genesee County for the 2007-08 school year.
Applications are available in the superintendent’s office, 8029 S. Gale Rd., for students in grades K-12 beginning on July 23, and must be returned to the administrative offices no later than 4 p.m. Aug. 10.
If more than four applications are submitted, the district will hold a lottery on Aug. 13. Parents will be notified whether their student was accepted or not by the end of the day Aug. 13.
