Mestas steps
down as UM-Flint
chancellor
FLINT — University of Michigan-Flint Chancellor Juan Mestas will resign from his position effective July 16. Mestas has been on medical leave since January after suffering a stroke.
“Chancellor Mestas has been a superb leader of the Flint campus and an outstanding officer of the University of Michigan,” said Mary Sue Coleman, president of UM-Flint. “I am pleased that he has agreed to return to campus, after completing a well-earned administrative leave that begins this summer, with appointment as Chancellor emeritus and special advisor to the chancellor and provost, pending approval by the Board of Regents.”
Dr. Jack Kay will continue as acting chancellor until the position is filled. — N.B.
Community
bike parade
GRAND BLANC — Grand Blanc residents are invited to the annual community bike parade on July 22.
The parade, which is open to all residents, begins at 1 p.m. at Indian Hill Elementary and continues to Rust Park, with a picnic at the pavilion at 2 p.m. Parade participants should arrive at the school at 12:30 p.m.
The parade will be led by the Grand Blanc Police Dept., which will provide and cook hot dogs at the picnic. Organizers ask participants to bring a dish to pass, their own beverages and lawn chairs. A $5 donation helps cover the cost of pavilion rental.

Meningitis clinics
GENESEE COUNTY — Visiting Nurse Services of Michigan offers meningitis clinics for students 11 and older July 12, 18, 19 and 26.
On July 12, the clinic is at Visiting Nurse Services of Michigan-Davison, 1515 Cal Dr., from 9-11 a.m. On July 18, the clinic is at Bordens Pharmacy, 415 W. Vienna Rd. in Clio, from 1-4 p.m. On July 19 and 26, the clinic is at Visiting Nurse Services of Michigan-Davison, 1515 Cal Dr., from 2-4 p.m. and 9-11 a.m.

Garden tour and luncheon
GOODRICH — Tickets for the third annual Salads Galore Luncheon in conjunction with the Goodrich Garden Tour are now available at Brown’s Hardware, 7281 S. State Rd.
The July 14 tour includes visits to a few gardens then lunch at the Goodrich United Methodist Church, 8071 S. State (M-15), anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. A $6 lunch donation includes unlimited salads, breads, beverages and desserts. Tickets are also available at the door. No burning permits
GRAND BLANC TWP. — The fire department is no longer issuing burning permits for Grand Blanc Twp. residents. The department resumes issuing burning permits on Oct. 15 this year through April 30, 2008.
The fire department does not issue burning permits to City of Grand Blanc residents at any time of the year. — J.N.
Balance screening
GRAND BLANC — Alterra Clairbridge, 5130 E. Baldwin Rd. in Grand Blanc, will conduct free balance screenings for fall prevention of the elderly from 10-11 a.m. on July 17.
