Behm steps down
ATLAS TWP. — Deputy Clerk Carol Behm will soon make way for Faith Wooley to take her position as deputy clerk. Behm served Atlas Twp. for seven years and now plans to move to Missouri to be closer to her family.
Wooley, chosen from among 8 candidates, has a Bachelor’s degree from Spring Arbor University, as well as years of office and election experience. She will officially take over from Behm on June 18. Wooley has lived in Atlas Twp. for ten years. — K.S.
Free mammograms
FLINT — Low-income women over the age of 40 can receive vouchers for free mammograms and breast X-rays during the “Mammograms for Mom and Me” event from 1-3 p.m. on June 9 at McCree Health Center, 115 Pierson Rd.
Sponsored by the Genesee County Health Department’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program and the Genesee County Cancer Connection, the event features how-to information about breast self-exams, door prizes and a chance to win a $20 gift card from Target or Kroger.

National HIV
testing days
FLINT — Wellness AIDS Services, 311 E. Court St., offers HIV testing June 21-27 from 9 a.m.-8 p.m.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 1,039,000 and 1,185,000 people in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS, with 24-27 percent undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV infection by the end of 2003.

Dewey Park
FLINT — Volunteers are invited to help spruce up Dewey Park on June 15. Mott Community College’s Community Outreach Partnership Center will sponsor a one-block cleanup and beautification project in the park, located behind the Sylvester Broome Center, 4119 N. Saginaw St. A free lunch will be served at noon.
Activities include trimming weeds, planting native foliage, painting a few houses and helping area residents dispose of household trash.

Garden tours
GENESEE COUNTY — Tickets for Genesee County’s largest garden show went on sale June 1 at the MSU Extension office, 4215 W. Pasadena Ave. in Flint Twp.
The June 24 tour includes the gardens of Pam Walmsley and Micheil Hanczaryk of Grand Blanc and Virginia Boring of Burton. The tour lasts from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $2 for children under the age of 12 and also available the day of the event at any of the garden sites.

‘Music Matters’ concert in June
GRAND BLANC — Grand Blanc Music will present its first “Music Matters” concert on June 15 and 16. The two-day event will benefit children in the community who have an interest in music, but have difficulty paying for instruments or instruction.
The event will showcase the talents of Grand Blanc Music instructors and special guests. Friday night’s show will feature mostly classical pieces, whereas Saturday’s performances will highlight classic rock/pop.

Schools announce use of automated system
GRAND BLANC — Beginning next fall, parents of students at Grand Blanc elementary and middle schools will receive notifications of attendance problems, school events and weather or other emergencies through an automated phone system.
The SynreVoice parent notification system, already used at the high school, automatically dials students’ homes and leaves a recorded message. “In the event of an emergency, we could get a call out to parents very quickly,” said Dana Taylor, director of business affairs for the district.
Annual cost for parents to subscribe to the system is $2.50. — N.B.
