Local chapter
recognized at P.E.O. Sisterhood Convention
SAGINAW
— Sharon Rice, Sally Walker and Pat Laycock recently represented Chapter FN of the P.E.O. Sisterhood at the 89th Annual Convention of the Michigan State Chapter of the International Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood at Saginaw Valley State University.
Chapter FN is the Grand Blanc chapter of the organization, although there are a total of nine chapters in the Flint area. The convention had a total of 475 members in attendance, along with 58 visitors.
The convention involved showcasing five international programs, two state projects, and the election of state officials. Sisters in attendance participated in workshops and performed skits to develop friendship.
The P.E.O. Sisterhood is an international philanthropic and educational organization that strives to advance the status of women through encouragement and education, including financial assistance in the form of grants, loans, and scholarships. Students win bikes
in school raffle
GRAND BLANC
— A lucky pair of Grand Blanc Middle School students each won a new bike in a random drawing May 23. Students who purchased a breakfast or lunch in the school cafeterias during the week of May 19-22 were eligible for the drawing, being given a raffle ticket to submit to win a prize.
Travis Sutton, a sixth-grader at Grand Blanc East Middle School, and Taylor Dontje, an eighth-grader at Grand Blanc West Middle School, were the lucky winners of the two 26’’ Roadmaster 18-speed bikes.
The bikes were donated by the Grand Blanc Dining Services department. — S.S.

Students attend
concert at School
for the Deaf
GRAND BLANC
— A group of third-graders from Indian Hill Elementary School attended a “Singing Hands” concert at the Michigan School for the Deaf May 8.
The concert, entitled THIS IS US was performed by students at MSD, who signed songs for attendees. The trip was scheduled to time with the students’ study of the life of Helen Keller, and it provided a hands-on example of displaying real civic duty to respect everybody equally.
Rachel Turner, a third-grade teacher at Indian Hill, said that the concert proved to be “an experience that will last a lifetime.” Funding for the trip was provided by a $600 grant from Target. — S.S.

— Novelist Ridley Pearson will be on hand to sign books and chat with patrons 7 p.m. June 20 at McFarlen Library, 515 Perry Rd.
