Students win
math award
GRAND BLANC
— Twenty students from Grand Blanc High School recently qualified for the 2007 Pedagoguery Award from The Mathematical Association of America.
The team earned the award for improving the best difference in team score from 2006 to 2007 on a 25-question test. Only one school per state qualifies for the award, with winning districts receiving a set of geometric models.
“The AMC (American Mathematics Competitions) is making this award to stimulate continued year-to-year interest in the AMC contests and to reward teachers who coach their teams to greater levels of achievement,” said director Steven R. Dunbar. — N.B.

Dogwalk-a-thon
FLINT
— The Humane Society of Genesee County hosts its 18th annual dogwalk-a-thon fundraiser on June 3 from noon-4 p.m. at Kearsley Park, 900 Kearsley Park Blvd.
The fundraiser features “Barker Street Square” vendors, an agility event, micro-chipping and a 50/50 drawing. Cost is $25 for adults, but registration is free if pledges are equal to or exceed the entrance fee. Children 12 and under are free with an adult.

No burning permits
GRAND BLANC TWP.
— The fire department is no longer issuing burning permits for Grand Blanc Twp. residents. The department resumes issuing burning permits on Oct. 15 this year through April 30, 2008.
The fire department does not issue burning permits to City of Grand Blanc residents at any time of the year. — J.N.

Summer open house
FLINT
— University of Michigan-Flint will host Something New for Youth at UM-Flint summer open house on June 5 from 5-7 p.m. on the Recreation Center north lawn.
UM-Flint offers a variety of summer camp experiences for grades K-12. Activities for the open house include tours of campus departments, raffle for camp discounts, pizza, a bounce house and slide.

Garden tours
GENESEE COUNTY
— Tickets for Genesee County’s largest garden show go on sale June 1 at the MSU Extension office, 4215 W. Pasadena Ave. in Flint Township.
The June 24 tour includes the gardens of Pam Walmsley and Micheil Hanczaryk of Grand Blanc and Virginia Boring of Burton. The tour lasts from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $2 for children under the age of 12 and also available the day of the event at any of the garden sites.

‘Music Matters’ concert in June
GRAND BLANC
— Grand Blanc Music will present its first “Music Matters” concert on June 15 and 16. The two-day event will benefit children in the community who have an interest in music, but have difficulty paying for instruments or instruction.
The event will showcase the talents of Grand Blanc Music instructors and special guests. Friday night’s show will feature mostly classical pieces, whereas Saturday’s performances will highlight classic-rock/pop.

Schools announce use of automated system
GRAND BLANC
— Beginning next fall, parents of students at Grand Blanc elementary and middle schools will receive notifications of attendance problems, school events and weather or other emergencies through an automated phone system.
The SynreVoice parent notification system, already used at the high school, automatically dials students’ homes and leaves a recorded message. “In the event of an emergency, we could get a call out to parents very quickly,” said Dana Taylor, director of business affairs for the district.
Annual cost for parents to subscribe to the system is $2.50. — N.B.

Grand Blanc Idol
GRAND BLANC
— Ready for another round of Idol contestants? Instead of searching the FOX network, go to Physician’s Park from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, June 15, for Grand Blanc’s version of Idol. The evening will feature the top 20 Grand Blanc High School contestants, who pre-auditioned prior to the show.
Any Grand Blanc High School student wishing to try out should call the Grand Blanc Parks & Rec office at 810-694-0101 to reserve an audition slot. The first 75 students to call will audition on June 4.
Of the top 20 to go to Physician’s Park, the top three contestants will win gift certificates and the top winner will have an opportunity to sing at one of the summer concert series events.
