Tropical Smoothie fundraiser
for Boys and
Girls Club

— Tropical Smoothie Café, 2383 E. Hill Rd., hosts a fundraiser 5-9 p.m. June 4 for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint.

MCC student wins
writing award
GRAND BLANC
— Mott Community College student and Grand Blanc resident Shamsah Alamshahi recently was honored at the MCC 2008 Student Writing Awards, winning the second place Beverly Blevins Award for “Unforgettable Memory.”
The Student Writing Awards are presented each year by the faculty of the English department in the humanities division at MCC. The Beverly Blevins Award for developmental writing students is given to winners of an annual student essay contest. Students in the English 023, 098 and 099 courses are eligible to receive these awards, and the winner receives a $50 Borders’ gift certificate. Second- and third-place winners receive $25 Borders’ gift certificates. Winners also will have their names engraved on a plaque in the Humanities Division office.

— There is a free anxiety elimination workshop scheduled for May 29 from 6:30- 8:30 p.m. at the Grand Blanc McFarlen Library.

Tennis boosters fundraiser
GRAND BLANC
— The Grand Blanc High School Tennis Boosters are hosting a can and bottle drive 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 7 in the Grand Blanc Kroger parking lot.
The boosters are raising money for wind screens, tennis equipment and funds to support both the boys’ and girls’ high school tennis teams for the 2008-09 season.
Anyone who has cans but is unable to drop them off, can contact the boosters to make arrangements.

Hats off to East
MS student
GRAND BLANC
— John Mamish was recently honored as one of 200 high-achieving middle school students at the HATS OFF Breakfast, sponsored by the Midwest Academic Talent Search.
Mamish, an eighth-grade student at Grand Blanc East Middle School, was recognized for achieving an extremely high score on the ACT while still in eighth grade or lower.
“He started doing things with the Midwest Academic Talent Search in third grade and by sixth grade he was taking the ACT,” said John’s mother, Sandra Mamish.
While only in eighth grade, he has achieved scores on the ACT comparable to those received by college-bound high school seniors.
In his spare time, Mamish plays alto saxophone in the marching band, is involved in several math activities, enjoys computers, and participates in activities related to robotics.
“He’s a great kid,” Sandra said. “He’s a really great kid, and I’m proud of him.” — A.S.
