Election Results

GENESEE COUNTY — Tuesday’s election results are in for the Goodrich and Grand Blanc school board races, the Genesee District Library millage renewal and the Mott Community College Board of Trustees: Grand Blanc: Incumbent Larry Polzin, running uncontested, received 98.46 percent of the vote in his bid for another four years on the board.

Goodrich: Voters re-elected Timothy Zirnhelt, who received 577 votes, or 27.03 percent of the total votes cast in the race, and elected challenger Linda Jackson with 670 votes, or 31.38 percent, to four-year terms on the board.

Incumbent Kenneth Rappuhn received 420 votes, or 19.67 percent, and challenger Kristen Kenny received 468 votes, or 21.92 percent.

Genesee District Library Proposal: The library millage renewal passed with 69.96 percent of the vote. The renewal is for 10 years.

Mott: Incumbent John L. Snell and challenger Sally Shaheen Joseph will serve six-year terms on the college board, with 37.27 percent and 31.38 percent of the vote, respectively. Incumbent Ehren J. Gonzales received 31.09 percent of the vote. — J.N.

‘The Batchelor’ casting call

GRAND BLANC TWP. — Women ages 21-35 are invited to a casting call for the ABC program “The Bachelor,” from 4-7 p.m.

May 10 at Grand Blanc Motorcars, Holly Road at I-75.

ABC representatives will be on hand to meet and qualify eligible contestants for the upcoming installment of the television series.

GB Motorcars also hosts a pre- Mother’s Day Cabaret, including dancing and celebrity guests, beginning at 7 p.m. May 12. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door, with proceeds benefiting Flint Athletes for Better Education. — J.N.

 

No burning permits
GRAND BLANC TWP. — The fire department is no longer issuing burning permits for Grand Blanc Township residents. The department will resume issuing burning permits on Oct. 15 this year through April 30, 2008.

The fire department does not issue burning permits to City of Grand Blanc residents any time of the year. — J.N.

McGrath employee receives literacy award
GRAND BLANC — Kim Spencer, a Title I Paraprofessional at McGrath Elementary School, will receive the “Celebrate Literacy Award” from the International Reading Association May 10 at the Flint Elks Club.

This organization recognizes individuals who have made significant literacy contributions. Spencer also is a member of Mc- Grath’s Positive Behavior Support team. For more information contact Cheryl Hemond at 810-591- 5901. — M.S.

Health students win competition
GRAND BLANC — Fourteen Grand Blanc High School students from the Health Occupations of America chapter competed at the state tournament in Traverse City April 19-21. Five have advanced to the National competition in Orlando, Fla., this June with their medal-winning performances.

First-place finishers were Katie Bieber in Administrative Medical Assisting, Rachel Langer in Medical Assisting Clinical and Nicole Batchelor for Nutrition.

Batchelor also took third in Extemporaneous Writing while Bieber teamed with Haala Hai to place second in the Community Awareness Team Presentation.

Walking for healthy hearts
GRAND BLANC — The American Heart Association needs participants for its 2007 Start! Genesee County Heart Walk 8 a.m.

May 12 at Genesys Nature Trail, 801 Health Park Blvd. Funds raised will provide for cardiovascular research and community education programs.

Walkers are eligible to earn prizes based on the dollars they collect from donations made by family and friends. Public participation is invited. For further information, call Lindsay Kuhnle at 586-876-6499. — M.S.

Free dental care
FLINT — The Gateway Dental Centre, 5321 Gateway Center Blvd., is hosting a Give Kids A Smile program from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

May 18. Events like this take place every year to provide free dental services to local, qualifying children and raise awareness of the epidemic of untreated dental disease occurring across the country.

An estimated 100 children from low-income families will be seen by three dentists, three hygienists, five assistants and other volunteers.

In Michigan only 30 percent of children enrolled in Medicaid received any dental service in 2005. For more information, call Anita Cardinal at 810-235-7300. — M.S.

Pancake breakfast
GRAND BLANC TWP. — The Grand Blanc Rotary Club hosts its 18th annual pancake breakfast from 8 a.m.-noon May 12 at Creasey Bicentennial Park.

Tickets are $5 per person and are available at the door or from any Grand Blanc Rotarian. Proceeds from the breakfast benefit the Rotary Club’s Youth Programs Fund. — J.N.

Car wash benefits cancer research
GRAND BLANC TWP. — The State Bank hosts a Car Wash for a Cure fundraiser from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 1 in the parking lot of its 1401 E. Hill Rd. branch office.

Proceeds from the $5 per vehicle car wash benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s annual fundraiser, with people forming teams and taking turns walking around a track over a 24-hour period to raise donations and awareness for cancer survivors, cancer research and other ACS programs.

The Grand Blanc Relay for Life begins at 10 a.m. June 2 in the Grand Blanc High School upper parking lot.
