Awards brunch

GRAND BLANC TWP. -- The Genesee District Library is having its 2007 Black History Month Awards Brunch at 10 a.m. Feb. 24 at the Genesys Conference and Banquet Center.

Featured at this year’s event, emceed by ABC-12’s Dawn Jones, will be: Susan L. Taylor, editorial director for Essence Magazine; Judge Archie L. Hayman from the seventh judicial circuit of Genesee County; Pastor Larry A. Holley of Abundant Life Ministries International; Chief Theresa A. Stephens-Locke, director of public safety at Mott Community College; and Lillian McCain, a professor at MCC.

Registration time

GRAND BLANC -- Parents of Grand Blanc kids who will be ready to start kindergarten next school year have several important dates upcoming, beginning with an informational meeting from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Grand Blanc High School West Commons.

Beginning Feb. 27, enrollment will begin at all district elementary schools from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. After Feb. 27, enrollment will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on all weekdays when school is in session.

There will be a health fair, bus ride and kindergarten registration from noon-6:30 p.m. May 9 at the Perry Center gym.

May 11 marks the deadline for all full day kindergarten and school of choice requests. They must be received at any elementary school office or the administration building by 4 p.m.

If necessary, a lottery for student placement in full day kindergarten will be at 1:30 p.m. May 15 at the administration building. Letters confirming placement or waiting list status (if needed) will be mailed May 16.

Cells for soldiers

GRAND BLANC TWP -- Rollhaven Skating Center is an official drop-off location for the “Cell Phones for Soldiers” program.

The phone are turned into minutes on a phone card for soldiers overseas to call home. Those donating phones at Rollhaven will get a free skating pass. For more information, call 810-694-4533. -- P.H.

 

Campaign a success

AREAWIDE -- The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan announced that it exceeded its holiday campaign goal this year, raising $632,000 for the community. The FBEM had hoped to raise $600,000.

The Food Bank, through various partner agencies, distributes more than 16 million pounds of food every year. For every $1 donated, the Food Bank can buy $14 worth of food through leveraging.

College bound

FLINT -- Baker College of Flint is hosting its annual open house for college-bound high school seniors this Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The free event is designed to help senior make an easy transition to college. There will be a breakfast, introduction from the president of Baker College, information on financial aid, career programs, information for parents and more.

Clean up time

FLINT -- The Keep Genesee County Beautiful group is hosting its third annual Community Beautification Leadership Conference and first-ever “Graffiti Hurts Flint” summit from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the University Center at the University of Michigan-Flint.

The theme of the conference is “Cultivating our Community” and includes workshops, an information fair and demonstrations. The program, funded by the Ruth Mott Foundation, is designed to initiate countywide efforts at beautification.

Twp. office open

Saturday for taxes

GRAND BLANC TWP. -- The township offices are open from 9 a.m.-noon this Saturday to receive property tax and water/sewer payments.

Any 2006 summer property taxes not paid by Sept. 14, 2006 are delinquent and assessed interest and penalties. The township will turn any delinquent real property taxes over to the Genesee County Treasurer’s office on March 1.

Property owners can make payments electronically by dialing 800-438-9926 or through the township’s website, www.twp.grand-blanc.mi.us. When paying by phone, the access code is 3144 for property taxes and 3143 for water/sewer. The township uses a credit card servicer that charges a convenience fee.

The township offices, 5371 S. Saginaw St., also have a drive-thru window for daytime use and an after-hours drop box in the parking for payments. Residents can review their tax payment status or property information at the township website.

FAME returns

GOODRICH -- FAME hosts its third performance of the season this Friday when the Golden Rain Percussion Ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. at Goodrich High School’s Raymond C. Green Center for the Performing Arts.

During the show, Golden Rain will play more than 100 instruments and a variety of genres, including African, Latin, historical jazz, contemporary, Brazilian and Mexican.

Tickets are available at the door for $15 and $20. Student tickets are $6 and senior citizen tickets are $12. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with an amateur photography contest in the gallery and musical entertainment in the lobby before the show and during intermission. -- J.N.
