fight hunger
FLINT — Area colleges helped raise more than 6,617 pounds of food and over $2,400 for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan’s inaugural “Higher Education Partnership” drive last month.
Students, faculty and alumni at Baker College of Flint, Kettering University, Mott Community College and UM-Flint collected the food and monetary donations from Nov. 15-Dec. 15. With the FBEM’s 14 to 1 leveraging ration for purchasing food, the food bank will be able to provide over 40,000 pounds of food to Mid-Michigan’s hungry residents.

Passport fair
DAVISON — The Davison Post Office is hosting a passport fair from noon-4 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Davison/Richfield Senior Center, 10135 Lapeer Rd.

Science fair
MID-MICHIGAN — The 51st annual Flint Area Science & Engineering Fair is March 16-18 at Kettering University, but now is the time for students to begin planning and developing their projects.

The Flint Area Science Fair is a non-profit organization promoting science for students in fourth through twelfth grades in Genesee, Lapeer, Shiawassee and Tuscola counties.
Students can win prizes, scholarships and awards, and a select number of students will be offered an all-expense paid trip to the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, NM, or invited to apply for the Discovery Competition in Washington, D.C. — J.N.

Parks hearing
GRAND BLANC — Grand Blanc Parks & Rec is hosting a public hearing to get community input on its five-year Master Plan draft at 6 p.m. Jan. 18 at its administrative offices.
Copies of the draft plan are available for review at the Parks & Rec Commission office, McFarlen Library, the Grand Blanc schools administration building and the City of Grand Blanc and Grand Blanc Township administrative offices.

GRAND BLANC TWP. — The township planning commission is expected to continue its discussion of a proposed Meijer store and gas station at the corner of Holly and Baldwin roads at tonight’s meeting.
The issue has been tabled since October, with township officials awaiting information on traffic studies being completed by the developers to determine what impact the store might have on traffic congestion in the area. Roadway improvements around the development are expected to be part of any approvals given.

CPR certification
FLINT — Visiting Nurse Services of Michigan is offering classes this month to become certified in CPR.
• A Heartsaver AED/CPR class will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 15 and teach the basics of adult CPR and how to use an AED. Cost is $30.
• A recertification class in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 17. This is a refresher course for those already certified in BLS who need to be recertified. Cost is $30.
