Brendel teacher
receives grant
GRAND BLANC
— Brendel Elementary third-grade teacher Christine McPheeters was awarded a $500 grant from the Grand Blanc Education Foundation at its January meeting.
The grant will go toward constructing reader’s and writer’s toolboxes to help students learn reading and writing strategies and gain skills in those areas.
The education foundation is a nonprofit corporation organized by friends and supporters of Grand Blanc Community Schools to enhance and enrich the educational opportunities offered to the students of Grand Blanc. — N.B.

Tutors wanted
GRAND BLANC
— Grand Blanc West Middle School, 1515 Reid Rd., needs volunteers to work with students from 3:10-4:10 p.m. on Wednesdays.

College fair at GBHS
GRAND BLANC
— Grand Blanc High School’s Robert J. Tartoni Athletic Center, 12500 Holly Rd., will be the site for the “Focus on the Future” College Fair, from 6:30-8 p.m. Feb. 5.
The free fair is open to all Genesee County students and their parents. Representatives from colleges and universities throughout the state and country will be on hand to assist with postsecondary education planning.

— Want to learn more about the early days of baseball, when pitchers were called “hurlists,” batters were called “ballists” and the umpire wore a suit and top hat?
The Flint Genealogical Society hosts a joint meeting with the Genesee County Historical Society at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Grand Blanc Heritage Museum, 203 E. Grand Blanc Rd. Bruce Rubenstein will have a presentation on “Vintage Baseball,” exploring the early days of America’s pastime.

District earns
international award
GRAND BLANC
— Grand Blanc Community Schools’ Business Office recently received the Meritorious Budget Award from The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) for the district’s excellence in the preparation and issuance of the 2007-08 annual budget.
This year marks the second year the office has received the international award for excellence in budget development, analysis and presentation.
Business Office staff includes Angela Arrand, Lauren Foley, Tena Moiles, Phil Montpas, Cristal Rousseau and Dana Taylor, C.P.A. and director of Business Affairs. — N.B.

Brendel hosts
Mom-to-Mom sale
GRAND BLANC
— The Brendel Elementary PTO is holding a Mom-to-Mom fundraising sale on Feb. 23 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. inside the Brendel Elementary gym, 223 Bush St.
In addition to the Mom-to-Mom sale, the PTO is looking for any area moms who might want to rent tables during the sale, and should call as soon as possible about reserving a spot because it will be first come, first served.
