Relay time

GRAND BLANC -- With only a couple months of planning left, Grand Blanc Relay for Life organizers are gearing up with this year’s kickoff meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Grand Blanc Senior Center.

Those attending can learn more about Relay and how to participate in this year’s event.

Relay for Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society. The Relay is a 24 hour event where teams keep members circling a track the entire time and raise pledges to fund cancer research and help find a cure.

This year’s Grand Blanc Relay for Life will be Saturday-Sunday, June 2-3, from 10 a.m.-10 a.m. at the Grand Blanc High School upper parking lot. Both the days and location are different this year, as previous events have been on a Friday and Saturday at Bicentennial Park.

Cancer survivors are invited to attend the event and register for this year’s Relay as well. -- P.H.

 

Hurley honor

FLINT -- Carol Skowronski, director of decision support at Hurley Hospital, has become a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).

Skowronski, a Grand Blanc resident, earned the honor after completing testing, written studies and other education requirements. ACHE is the leading professional society for healthcare leaders and executives and fellow is the highest level of professional achievement. -- <B>P.H.<$>

 

For the ‘Love’

GRAND BLANC -- Holy Family Catholic School second grader Ava Pietras recently gave to a good cause.

Ava, a student in Mrs. Hehl’s class at Holy Family, spent about one and a half years growing her hair to donate to “Locks of Love,” a non-profit organization that makes prosthetic wigs for children suffering from conditions or illnesses causing hair loss. Ava was able to donate 11 inches of hair.

Scrapbookers wanted

GOODRICH -- The Goodrich High School Choir is seeking scrapbookers for its second annual Goodrich High School Crop Fundraiser from 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Feb. 3 in the school cafeteria.

Admission is $30 pre-paid and includes a catered lunch and dinner, refreshments and snacks, and an opportunity to win raffles and door prizes.

Completed registration forms and checks made payable to Goodrich Vocal Music should be mailed to: Jennifer Davis, Goodrich High School, 8029 S. Gale Rd., Goodrich MI, 48438.

Community talk

FLINT -- Community leaders will come together for a panel discussion on “Are We Better Together? Regional Cooperation for Genesee County’s Future,” from 7-9 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Mott Community College Regional Technology Center Auditorium.

The main topic will be how shrinking revenues and dwindling resources have left many local areas struggling to provide basic municipal services. This program, which is presented by the Flint Area Public Affairs Debates group, is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Meal patterning seminar

GRAND BLANC TWP. -- Genesys Athletic Club presents a “Meal Patterning” seminar to help people develop healthy nutritional patterns from 9-11:30 a.m. this Saturday.

The seminar, led by personal trainer and nutrition guru Chris Johnson, helps participants improve their nutritional knowledge and meal planning; offers grocery shopping tips; and instructs people on how much to eat, how often to eat and how to obtain optimal balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat intake at each meal. The seminar includes a tasting of several healthy recipe options.

Cost is $39 per person or $65 per couple. To register, or for more information, call the Genesys Athletic Club at 810-606-7300. Participants do not need to be a member of the club to register for the seminar. -- J.N.

 

EBay day

GRAND BLANC -- The Grand Blanc Post Office hosts an <I>eBay Day<$> from 5-7 p.m. today at the Holy Family Father Bush Parish Hall, 11824 S. Saginaw Rd.

Postal experts will explain online auctioning, demonstrate how to sell items on eBay and then how to use Click-N-Ship at www.usps.com to mail items. The post office also will have free prize drawings and refreshments during the training session.

The post office asks that anyone planning to attend the eBay Day pre-register so the post office can gauge the number of people planning to attend. Call 810-694-4241 to register or with questions. -- J.N.

 

Financial aid night

GRAND BLANC -- Grand Blanc Community Schools hosts a Financial Aid Night at 7 p.m. Jan. 29 in the Commons of Grand Blanc High School East, on the corner of Holly and Saginaw Roads.

Staff from the UM-Flint Official of Financial Aid will present information and offer instructions and assistance for parents and students in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Parents and seniors from GBHS and all area high schools are welcome to attend. Call Gerald Survant, GBHS counselor, at 591-6651 with questions.
