Case earns first
place for ‘Kids Create’
GRAND BLANC — Local crafter Debbie Case earned first place for creating the “Best New Youth Program,” and was honored at the Michigan Recreation Park Association POW (Programming Our World) Conference held in Kalamazoo on Nov. 26-28.
Recreation Programmer Kellie Sergent nominated Case’s after-school “Kids Create” Pastry Chef Class, a program designed to teach kids different skills ranging from cooking, sewing, polymer clay and mixed media. Case’s programs for Grand Blanc Parks and Recreation will start at the end of January, with Saturday classes running through March for boys and girls in grades 1-8.
“Teaching the kids some pastry skills and seeing their excitement when they show their parents is very rewarding,” Case said.
Case also held after-school classes this fall at Indian Hill, Myers and Reid Elementary Schools, and the same after-school classes will start up again in February at Mason, Cook, Brendel, Anderson and McGrath Elementary Schools.

Protect postal
carriers
MICHIGAN — They have dedicated themselves to delivering the mail in rain, sleet or snow — but that doesn’t mean homeowners should not do their part to make postal workers’ jobs safer as carriers make their daily rounds.
The U.S. Postal Service asks that homeowners remember to keep the walks and steps leading to their doors clear of snow and ice.
“Our carriers want to do the best possible job for their customers, but slips and falls during the winter really take a toll on their health and safety,” said Dan Orton, spokesperson for the Postal Service’s southeast Michigan district.
For those with curb-mounted or roadside mailboxes, try to ensure the mounds of snow and ice that pile up around the mailboxes does not become excessive.
“This enables postal vehicles to safely approach and pull away from mailboxes, and also makes it safer for customers to retrieve their mail,” Orton said.
