School volunteers honored
GRAND BLANC — Thirty-one Grand Blanc High School volunteers were recognized for their commitment at the GBHS PTO/Partnership business meeting on Nov. 6. The honorees had a combined total of 7,094 hours of volunteer service, and each one received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.
To earn the award, recipients must volunteer at least 100 hours over a one-year period. Recipient Kim Capton was awarded the Call to Service Award for accumulating more than 4,000 hours of lifetime volunteerism.

Christmas breakfast at Woodfield
GRAND BLANC TWP. — The Southeast Genesee Association of Retired School Personnel hosts its annual Christmas Breakfast Meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 4 at the Woodfield Golf Club off Baldwin Road.
There will be a gift presentation to Meals on Wheels and guests are asked to bring a small wrapped gift marked “male” or “female” that will be delivered with the Christmas trays to the recipients of Meals on Wheels.
All retired school personnel and their spouses are welcome to attend and learn more about the group, which provides information and advocacy for issues affecting retired school employees.

Parks prepares
for winter season
GRAND BLANC — Grand Blanc Parks and Rec. will start registration for its winter sports season at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 11. Grand Blanc residents can register at the parks and recreation office, 306 E. Grand Blanc Rd.
Non-residents or those registering online may begin registering at 9 a.m. Dec. 12. Winter programs include basketball for boys and girls, swimming lessons, gymnastics and Daddy Daughter Date Night, special needs programs and others. Look for flyers with information that will be sent home from school after the Thanksgiving holiday.

LaCrosse booster meeting
GRAND BLANC — In preparation for the Grand Blanc Boys’ LaCrosse Club season this spring, the booster club hosts a meeting at 7 p.m. on Nov. 28 at McFarlen Library.
Booster club organizer Mary Millwood invites parents to come to the meeting to learn more about Grand Blanc LaCrosse and to begin planning the upcoming season.
Parents of high school boys who have played on the team before, or parents of boys who have not played but are interested in playing, are invited to attend.
In January, the Booster club plans to hold an informational meeting for parents and players to discuss the season, rules and scheduling.

Babysitting fundraiser
GOODRICH — Parents who need time to shop for Christmas or have some personal time can drop their children off at Goodrich Middle School on Nov. 30.
Experienced babysitters will watch potty-trained kids for a donation, with all donations benefiting the district’s Class of 2009 prom expenses. Activities during the session include games, crafts, movies, food and mini-clinics.

Still time to give
MICHIGAN — Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land reminds residents that nonperishable food can still be donated to any branch office during the Harvest Gathering food drive, now through Dec. 14.
Donations of peanut butter, canned meat, canned fruit, canned vegetables and soups, and nonperishable food will benefit disadvantaged families in the community.
Cash donations are accepted and are used to cover costs of collecting and distributing the food.
Last year the Michigan Harvest Gathering raised more than $300,000 and 350,000 pounds of food. This year’s goal is $350,000 and 500,000 pounds of food.

Center changes
van schedule
GRAND BLANC — The Grand Blanc Activity Center, 12632 Pagels Dr., changed its van schedule. The van will run 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday.
For safety concerns, the bus needs to be back at the center by 4 p.m. to coincide with senior center hours.

No licenses, plates on Thanksgiving
MICHIGAN — On Nov. 22 and 23, all Secretary of State offices will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.

penalty.

Michigan budget
crisis discussion
FLINT — Baker College of Flint hosts Tom Clay of the Citizen’s Research Council at 9 a.m. on Dec. 14 in the college’s auditorium.
Clay’s discussion focuses on “Michigan’s Budget Crisis: A Long-term Analysis of the Future for Michigan’s Economy and State Finances.” Clay joined the CRC in 1997 after working 31 years with the State of Michigan.
