Council might freeze Parks & Rec fund
GRAND BLANC
— Mayor Michael Matheny said he wants to freeze over $580,000 in the parks and recreation department’s account in hopes of saving the money for future uses. The funds were generated from now defunct millage.
“My concern is that it doesn’t get nickel and dimed down to nothing. We need to set a base for where we go with that account,” said Matheny. “We shouldn’t let it go below a certain level. I’d like to hold the line on this for the first year so we can build it up over the next few years.”
Last November voters decided not to extend the parks and recreation millage request. The City and Grand Blanc Township jointly fund the department.
The council voted unanimously to send the issue to the finance committee for further review and recommendation.
In other news:
• City manager Randy Byrne said the city interviewed eight candidates for the finance director position on May 24. City officials did not give a definitive timetable for filling the position.
• The council approved a contract to hire Zachary Koan as the market manager for the Grand Blanc City Farmer’s Market. Koan will work up to 15 hours a week at a rate of $15/hour.
• The council unanimously agreed to dissolve the building authority department.
• The next council meeting is at 7 p.m. June 13 in the council chamber at City Hall, 203 E. Grand Blanc Rd. — N.B.
