GOODRICH
BOARD OF
EDUCATION
New bus
purchased
ATLAS TWP.
— In an act they called playing catch-up, the Goodrich school board okayed the purchase of another school bus for $69,568 at its regular meeting on Monday.
“The committee had recommended buying three buses,” said Supt. Kim Hart. “The district was probably one bus down.”
Earlier this year the board approved the purchase of two buses specially designed with a 2006 engine. “There were a few buses left that would meet our needs,” said Hart. No financing would be needed for the purchase and brings the transportation total up to 21 buses. Hart said that she thought the district had four buses with over 200,000 miles logged.
“There was a year — 2003, I think, that we didn’t purchase any,” said Trustee Michael Thorp. That year caused the district to fall behind in its needs for transportation.
In other business:
• The board held a public hearing on the breakfast program. Hart recommended keeping the program at all schools but now the district will ask the USDA for reimbursement because the district has had a greater number of students getting free or reduced price meals.
• Preliminary budget numbers were discussed during a public hearing, with the assumption that enrollment would remain at 2,184 students, and expecting spending to remain “flat.” The draft document included hiring seven new teachers for Oaktree and the high school. — R.C.
