GRAND BLANC — The City of Grand Blanc received its 16th consecutive Certificate for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) at its meeting Aug. 13.
The award was presented by MGFOA President Thelma Kubitsky, assistant township manager for Northville Township.
Established in 1945, the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program (CAFR Program) was created to “encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal,” according to the website.
Municipalities submit reports to the CAFR program, which are then reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and the GFOA Special Review Committee (SRC).
“This is an outstanding achievement for the city, and it reflects a high level of commitment (by the city),” Kubitsky said.
City Manager Randy Byrne later thanked Wendy Jean-Buhrer, finance director/assistant city manager, and Bethany Smith, clerk, for their work in helping the city achieve the award.
“I’m not sure there is another small community with this award 16 years in a row,” Byrne said.
