Miracle boxes
OAKLAND COUNTY — Local “Desert Angels” recently sent miracle boxes to U.S. troops stationed overseas. The boxes were sent in honor of Ortonville’s fallen hero Joseph Miracle, who died in July while stationed in Afghanistan.
On Nov. 3, the group will hold a “Keep our Troops Warm” packing party from 1-4 p.m. at Old Town Hall in Ortonville. The group also will hold a packing party from 1-6 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Meijer store in Oxford.
Items needed for boxes include knitted/crocheted wool helmet liners, scarves, long underwear, flannel sheets, hot chocolate, tea, graham crackers, travel-sized toiletries and more.

First Frost Festival
FLINT — The Flint Institute of Arts, 1120 E. Kearsley St., announces the return of the First Frost Festival from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 3 and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 4.
The festival features more than 45 hand-selected artists displaying fine items created from fiber, wood, clay, glass and mixed media. Coinciding with the festival, the FIA and Founders Society announce a Festival of Trees auction during First Frost Festival hours.
The highest bidder at 3 p.m. Nov. 4 wins the tree. Participants are encouraged to bid early and often. Trees featured at the auction include a Renaissance tree by Vogt’s Florist, an aviary-themed tree by Wild Birds Unlimited, a glitzy tree adorned with antique crystals by Fratz Consignment, and a fun and whimsical tree donated by Patti Ballentine.
Trees are valued up to $800 and range in price from $50-$500. All proceeds from the auction support the FIA. Admission is $5, or $10 with lunch. Call 810-234-1695 for more information. — N.B.


Health fair
FLINT — McLaren’s Diabetes Education Program hosts its annual health fair at McLaren Regional Medical Center’s Ballenger Auditorium, 6-8 p.m. on Nov. 7.
The fair includes a variety of vendors, certified diabetes educators and registered dietitians and a cooking demonstration with Chef Mike Price.
Refreshments and door prizes will be available. Registration is from 5:30-6 p.m., with the program from 6-7:30 p.m.

GRAND BLANC — Adopt-A-Pet of Fenton hosts a silent auction at Woodfield Country Club on Nov. 10. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., bidding starts at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $45 and include dinner, dessert and two drink tickets.

Longway Planetarium tours fall sky
FLINT — Longway Planetarium, 1310 E. Kearsley St., hosts events giving people the chance to study the constellations as they appear during the fall months. The star and laser shows run back-to-back every Saturday and Sunday afternoon throughout November.
The Super Sky Show begins at 12:30 p.m. Tour the night sky with host Seymour Sky and guests sun, moon, Queen Cassiopeia and a mystery guest.
Nine Planets and Counting starts at 1:30 p.m. Search the solar system and boggle the mind while considering how many planets might be in the universe.
Digital Amusement Park opens at 2:30 p.m. Experience the thrill of speed and laser lights that takes viewer on an amusement park-like ride.
Laser Classic Vinyl shows are at 3:30 p.m. Enjoy a laser show that teams up with classic rockers from the vinyl record age featuring Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Who and other classic artists.
A special showing of Digital Amusement Park is Nov. 23-25 with shows at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Menopause
health seminar
GRAND BLANC — Whether it’s now or later, every woman will one day deal with the transition known as menopause. Women who want some answers should attend the free women’s health seminar hosted by Complete Care Center, 8401 Holly Rd., 7-8:30 p.m. Nov. 8.
Certified Nurse Practitioners Bonnie Guith and Ann Henley will lead participants in discussing women’s concerns about the symptoms and treatments for menopause. Included in the talks will be information about Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), which is an alternative to traditional hormonal replacement therapy.
“We are one of the few medical clinics in the area to dedicate considerable resources to educating women about their treatment options for menopausal symptoms,” said Roland R. Tindle, DO, of Complete Care Center, who recalls that the insistence of one patient drove him to research menopausal treatment options. “She literally grabbed me by the necktie to ensure I understood how severe her symptoms were,” added Tindle.

Holiday bazaar
and craft show
BURTON — Valley Christian Academy hosts a holiday bazaar and craft show 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 10.

FSO audition
FLINT — The Flint Symphony Orchestra, Enrique Diemecke, music director and conductor, will hold auditions for the position of third bassoon on Nov. 5.
The auditions are at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance at the Earl V. Moore Building, 1100 Baits Dr., Ann Arbor. Go online at www.thefim.com/auditions.asp for the third bassoon audition repertoire.
The candidate who fills this position should expect to play at a minimum of 28 services beginning with the 2007-08 season.
