MAYVILLE — Scholarships from the Tom Wargo Scholarship Golf Classic were awarded Saturday to four area students. From LakeVille, De’Nae Williams and Michele Yambrick and Mayville’s Nathan Hopp and Megan Ouillette were the chosen recipients. De’Nae, daughter of John and Diane Williams, is a three-sport athlete (basketball,volleyball,softball), who is also involved in the school band, is an NHS member and is the student council president.
She also received the Principal’s Award and received the Outstanding Achievement Award in Math, Science, English and Social Studies. Williams plans on obtaining a degree in secondary education and hopes to become a high school teacher.
Michele, daughter of Lauren Beebe will attend SVSU this fall but is undecided on a major. Yambrick is a member of the varsity volleyball and softball teams, quiz bowl MVP, NHS member and a member of a church youth group. Yambrick’s high school success has earned her an SVSU Dean’s Scholarship for $3000/yr along with a Michigan Competitve Scholarship.
Yambrick also received the President’s Education Award for outstanding academic achievement and had perfect attendance all through high school.
Hopp, son of Larry and Charlene Hopp, will attend Delta College as a nursing major. Nathan was captain of the Mayville golf team and has volunteered at the Tom Wargo Classic for the last four years. Hopp also received the Jack Nicklaus Award in 2006, the same year he earned the All-Conference Scholar Athlete Award. Hopp received the Tuscola Tech Center Workplace Readiness Award for problem solving in 2007-2008.
Ouillette, daughter of Alan and Sandra Ouillette, will either attend Alpena Community College or Delta College for graphic design. Megan has received three board scholar awards along with the Tuscola Tech Center Workplace Readiness Award for integrity, politeness and team work. She is also a member of the Art Club, S.A.D.D., NHS and the National Technical Honor Society.
This was the eighth year of the Wargo Scholarship Classic as PGA pro Tom Wargo continues to give back to the community year after year at this wonderful event.
