LAPEER — The city planning commission has given the green light for a drive-through lane for a proposed Walgreens drug store at the site of the former Taco Bell and the current Fast Stop car wash and gas station on S. Main Street.
The next step toward approval for the new business is the site plan.
Lapeer Planning Director Linda Jackman said Walgreens submitted site plans to the city this week for planning commission review. That could come as early as the July 10 meeting.
Jackman said the plans for the 2-acre site includes a 13,650-square-foot building, which, if approved would be completed by next spring. The site is on the east side of M-24, just north of DeMille.
In other action, the planning commission also unanimously approved a special use permit for a drive-through window at the soon-to-be rebuilt McDonald’s restaurant on S. Main Street.
A site plan for the expansion was approved by the planning commission at its May 8 meeting. Rebuilding dates are not set, but the demolition and rebuilding from the current 5,000 square feet to 5,600 square feet will likely be completed no later than spring 2009.
The current restaurant was built in the 1970s. — M.A.
