LAPEER — The Lapeer Kiwanis Club will sponsor the county’s first poetry competition Saturday, June 7, in downtown Lapeer during Lapeer Celebrates the Arts.
The Poetry Slam is a lyrical competition for Lapeer County poets ages 12 to 18. Each poet will need one to five poems on hand to be judged in a series of rounds by a random panel of judges.
The audience is encouraged to participate in the event through clapping, cheering, or heckling. Poets may not use singing, props or foul language; those who do not follow the guidelines will be disqualified. Early registration is encouraged.
Lapeer Celebrates the Arts is also looking to add some spice to the outdoor atmosphere with street performers. Jugglers, magicians, storytellers, musicians, mimes, dancers and clowns are all needed for set times on one of the side stages or to roam the crowd.
Interested performers can contact Sally Eilersen at lapctymusic@yahoo.com. — Saralynn Bush
