Summer days speeding away
[Jul. 3, 2008] It must have been the weather or the rains or even the loss of power, which seems to have stolen what used to be the first full-blown month of summer, much like the Grinch steals Christmas. No matter what, Flag Day, Fathers’ Day and the First Day of Summer have come and gone, and we are about to be lit up by the Fourth of July. By Bill Kernan

Winning might not be everything
[Jun. 19, 2008] With the glow of the Stanley Cup returning to Detroit and the glorious proud celebration of the victory, I somehow recalled the story about Shayla playing baseball for the first time. By Bill Kernan

Must the other shoe now drop?
[Jun. 5, 2008] We have talked and written about “Good-old-boy killers” in our midst, but despite energetic and intelligent efforts by responsible public officials the slaughter goes on and on. By Bill Kernan

Coloring look
[May 22, 2008] The bedroom window overlooking the lake took on a new look recently when huge white blossoms sprang into life on the former stark branches on the tree. Botany was by no means a favorite school subject of mine, so I am unable to provide the name of the tree that produced this most welcome change from the snows of winter to gentle blessings of spring. By Bill Kernan

Mom's Day
[May 8, 2008] The second Sunday in May. Every year we celebrate the greatest day of the year to honor the greatest miracle of life, motherhood. By Bill Kernan

Rust removal
[Apr. 24, 2008] Like Dorothy’s friend, the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, I am now in need of some squirts from his oil can to start me going again and plunge me into the wonders found on the yellow brick road of summertime in Michigan. By Bill Kernan

Now spring IS here
[Apr. 10, 2008] Come out! Come out! Wherever you are! Baseball is here! By Bill Kernan

Faint fame
[Mar. 27, 2008] I know that I will never make it as an American Idol, but in thinking of finding a place for my talents, skills and energy I may try another avenue to public recognition. In review of my very few activities since the first snowflake fell this winter I have decided to be the Lake Metamora Idle. By Bill Kernan

Politics — 101
[Mar. 13, 2008] One of the hidden secrets of keeping warm during winter — while keeping fuel costs down — is to engage in political chatter during a presidential election year. By Bill Kernan

Warmth beyond hibernation
[Feb. 28, 2008] I wonder if hibernating bears are ever subject to hot flashes that could move them out of their dens and into the cold ahead of time. By Bill Kernan

Favorite nation — HIBER
[Feb. 14, 2008] I pledge allegiance to my new favored nation — HIBER — and to the repose for which it stands, or simply hide beneath warm blankets of comfort as the ravaging storms of winter take their toll from the brave hearts who challenge the fearful threats of cold, ice and snow. If the powerful bear with his big and warm fur coat can do it, why oh why can’t I?

Not all that happens in Las Vegas, stays in Vegas
[Jan. 31, 2008] W ith the Christmas tree still standing — though no longer surrounded by sparkling gifts and overstuffed stockings — I have been keeping the wonders of Christmas still stirring with Christmas music quietly playing in the background as I once again read the holiday greetings that have come our way. By Bill Kernan

Resolution time
[Jan. 17, 2008] Well here I am again, late getting started on determining a list of resolutions for the new year. High on my list was to be prompt in all things and do away with my constant practice of procrastination. I guess it isn’t too late to amend that one if I can only truly get started some time this month. By Bill Kernan

In a word or nine ...
[Jan. 3, 2008] In a word or nine, without intention to offend anyone, I want to say to everyone: Have a great day or even a great season! By Bill Kernan

A town, a state and a nation’s response to threats
[Dec. 20, 2007] The town of Metamora, the state of Texas and the nation of Canada have a bold and unique manner of responding to serious, threatening dangers to their citizens. Canada will meet the challenge of a riot by sending one Royal Canadian Mounted policeman. Texas will send one Texas Ranger and Metamora will send one Metamora police officer. By Bill Kernan
