Treasures in town
[Jul. 27, 2006] As we all know there are many treasures hidden in plain view. It often takes something very special for us to bring them into focus. It may come with a slight disturbance or even a jolt of pain. Sometimes it requires only a gentle nudge and suddenly we come to behold it in all of its wonder. It happened again for me recently following one of Mary’s not too gentle nudges. By Bill Kernan

Midsummer dreams disturbed ...
[Jul. 20, 2006] Just as I settled down for my summer dreaming, I was awakened. With one eye still opened I caught the cheers of the American League All Stars and their dramatic come-frombehind win after there were two outs in the bottom of the ninth. By Bill Kernan

Ah, summer ...
[Jul. 13, 2006] The fireworks are over.As booming beautiful as they were, they could also keep a guy awake, and this is not the season for wakefulness.Overstuffing one’s self with bratwurst tends to put one on the road to comfortable living, sometimes known as laziness.Well, so be it. By Bill Kernan

Days may come and go, but the daze may last forever
[Jul. 6, 2006] After my feeble attempts to be a founder of special “Days” in which I did my best to establish Feb. 17 as “Brothers’ Day,” and Aug. 30, as “Sisters’ Day,” I have decided to retire from the business of being a “Day founder.” By Bill Kernan

One more attempt to found a Day
[Jun. 29, 2006] After a very underwhelming response to my suggestion that similar joys of celebration for Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day, I still believe that we could benefit by establishing a couple of more “Days.” I mentioned the establishment of “Brothers’ Day” and maybe even one more. By Bill Kernan

How about one more day? Or even two?
[Jun. 22, 2006] Wasn’t it delightful to recently celebrate Mother’s Day? It was also wonderful to see so many mothers being celebrated and honored by so many of their children. It was truly a touch of the divine, moving our hearts, minds and souls to experience the awesome powers generated and shared by families under the quiet guidance of maternal devotion and teaching.

June is busting out all over
[Jun. 8, 2006] Here it is in the middle of the year when these 30 days are called, “JUNE” and we cherish them. By Bill Kernan

To know your state is to love your state
[May 25, 2006] It wasn’t as though my friend, Len Shaffer, was a member of the Michigan Border Patrol checking my passport. It was more of a matter of his desire for my own enlightenment that led him to invite Mary and I to join him and his wife, Lois, for a trip to Lansing. By Bill Kernan

Celebrating May and Mom
[May 18, 2006] May is now here. The fifth month with so many delights to enthrall us and send our spirits soaring. It is not like most other months that come and go with little or no fanfare.

It is a very special month. It has always been very special for me. By Bill Kernan

First game of the season
[May 11, 2006] What a day. It was Saturday. The sun was shining brightly. The unfrozen waters of the lake were gently rolling toward the now emerald green shore and the multicolored bushes and trees were flavoring the entire landscape. By Bill Kernan

Saints among us today
[Apr. 27, 2006] The new pope, Benedict XVI, keeps on making news. One of the most welcomed items was his announcement that the process of canonization would be speeded up for declaring sainthood for the late Pope John Paul II. Traditional slower procedures were changed by the late Pope for the more rapid elevation to sainthood for Mother Teresa.
I am all for the change. In fact, I would go ahead and proceed to do it much faster. I would proclaim sainthood for saints even before they died. By Bill Kernan

‘Next year’ is here
[Apr. 20, 2006] The wait is now over! The annual lament heard every fall around Tiger Town has been a sniffling, “Wait until next year.” A last anguished cry as another baseball season comes crashing down. By Bill Kernan

’Tis not the season to be jolly
[Apr. 13, 2006] With a snow-free St. Patrick’s Day now behind us, Palm Sunday readings of celebration and tragedy now put to rest, and the long-sought-after First Day of Spring marked off of the calendar, there isn’t too much to cheer about, with what is called “Good Friday” now confronting us. By Bill Kernan

A real treasure
[Apr. 6, 2006] The phone rang. It was Harold Gass of Imlay City. He told me about one of those Lapeer Codger Treasures that I am always searching for. Not a Codger, but a treasure. By Bill Kernan

Some thoughts are gems
[Mar. 9, 2006] The holy season of Lent has now come upon us and we fall somber as we contemplate eternal things following the festivals of merriment. I fall silent in pondering things of such magnitude. By Bill Kernan
