Vietnam veteran wins MCC award
NORTH BRANCH
— Marvin Dale Cronce, a student at Mott Community College, is the winner of the 2007 Bommarito Family Outstanding Student Award. This award is given annually to a student who mirrors the personal strengths of English faculty member Joseph Bommarito, who died in 2003.
Cronce, a Vietnam veteran, “shares the same positive spirit and attitude, a strong work ethic, a willingness to help others and creative writing skills. He contributes to an outstanding classroom environment and has proved his ability to meet life’s challenges,” notes a release from MCC.
He was nominated by MCC English Prof. Julie Steffey, who watched him befriend a young student who grew up in foster care. Later, she learned from the young man that Cronce quietly loaned him money for car repairs. Without the veteran’s help, the young man would not have been able to finish the semester.
Steffey was impressed by Cronce’s journal entries and his anonymous donation of Harry Potter prizes to encourage other students when the class was studying Potter stories. The Bommarito award comes with a certificate and $200 cash. — J.E.B.
