Iron Chef cooks

— The Lapeer Country Club is hosting its second annual Iron Chef of Lapeer competition to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association Thursday, June 15, from 5-8 p.m.
All local restaurants and chefs are invited to participate. A trophy will be awarded to the winner. Tickets are $20 each, or $120 for a table of eight, which includes hors d’oeuvres, samplings of the chef’s special chicken entrées, entertainment, raffles and a silent auction. — AARP Michigan is rallying members, their families and friends to team with the American Red Cross and donate life-saving blood during a statewide drive May 11-13.
The annual AARP Day of Service in Michigan has been transformed into a three-day event for 2006. The AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization that helps people 50 years and over with independence, empowerment and protection.

— A “Breakfast Foods Packing Party” to support the troops is scheduled for Thursday, May 11, at 7 p.m. at the Oxford Veterans Memorial Civic Center.

— Students and family members of the Korean Martial Arts Institute will collect donations for their three-mile fundraising walk to downtown Lapeer and back on Saturday, May 13. This year’s benefit is for cystic fibrosis.
Walkers and volunteers will meet at the institute on 935 Baldwin Rd. at 11:30 a.m. The school has raised as much as $1,500 per event since starting fundraisers for children’s charities in 1990.
“It makes the students realize how healthy they are,” staffer Sue Whitman said of the community service project.

“No matter how long ago your mother died, it still hurts — especially around Mother’s Day,” says Bereavement Coordinator Elise Kelly. The event features a buffet luncheon, musical entertainment, a time for sharing memories, and the opportunity to create a scrapbook craft page.

— Because of the tremendous response for the first Garden Design Class, the Lapeer County MSU Extension is again offering it to homeowners.
The new class is May 20 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Lapeer County MSU Extension office at 287 W. Nepessing.
Bring the dimensions and photos of a small area, and instructor Julie Robak will help design a customized landscape plan. The cost of the class, which includes lunch and paper supplies, is $50.
