Strategic planning
LAPEER
— Dyle Henning will lead a strategic planning session for the Citizens for Farmland Preservation & Quality Growth at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the USDA Service Center, 1739 N. Saginaw Rd. The meeting is open to the public.
Henning is a retired extension director and active member of the citizens group. Members share information about farmland protection and support Lapeer County’s Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) program.

Mission auction

— Antiques, furniture, china, gift certificates and more will be auctioned Saturday, May 31, at the Hadley Township Hall, 3553 Hadley Rd. The doors open at 4 p.m. for preview. Live and silent auctions begin at 5 p.m.
This event is hosted by the Hadley Community Church to help finance a youth mission trip to Brazil. Auctioneer: Paul Hickmott. — J.E.B.

Easy reading
LAPEER
— Help children discover ways to improve reading skills with “Tutoring Made Easy,” a free workshop for parents and caregivers presented by Family Literacy Center. Topics include learning styles, phonics, sight words, comprehension and more. Participants receive a great resource book of strategies for teaching children.
This workshop will be Saturday, June 7 from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Mott College Campus in Lapeer, room 204. Lunch and all materials are provided. Registration is required. Adults only, please. Farmers’ market has kids’ poster contest
LAPEER
— Children are invited to design a poster that advertises the Lapeer Farmers’ Market. Deadline for submissions is June 4. All posters entered in the contest will be displayed in downtown store windows throughout the market season. The posters must be on 11-by-17-inch paper or poster board, and must include specific wording. A complete list of rules is available at the market, downtown Lapeer, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Contest prizes are paid in DBA Bucks (Downtown Business Association). First place $50, Second place $25, Third place, $10.

Farm advocates
set annual dues
LAPEER
— Membership dues of $10 a year have been set by Citizens for Farmland Preservation and Quality Growth, a group of people from all walks of life dedicated to the protection of agricultural land and wise land use. The committee was formed a decade ago, but did not charge dues until now. The money is needed for postage. The group normally meets on the second Wednesday of each month, 9:15 a.m. at the USDA Lapeer Service Center, 1739 N. Saginaw Rd. The next meeting has been rescheduled for June 4. — J.E.B.

LHS alumni picnic
LAPEER
— Lapeer High School Alumni Association is hosting its annual potluck picnic June 10 at noon at the Hollis Hayes farm, 355 N. Hayes Rd. No reservations needed. Bring a lawn chair and a favorite dish to pass. Rain or shine. — J.E.B.
