Hazardous Waste
and Clean Sweep
LAPEER — Farmers and non-farmers in Lapeer County who want to safely get rid of unwanted pesticides and hazardous waste can participate in Lapeer County MSU Extension’s annual Household Hazardous Waste/Clean Sweep collection on Saturday, April 19.
Only people who have made appointments will be allowed to use the service. Registration is required by April 10. Call 810-667-0344 to register. No materials will be accepted at the Extension office or without an appointment.
The collection gives residents a safe way to dispose of unwanted materials that could pose a danger to the community if improperly handled or stored. Clean Sweep is a non-regulatory program to help farmers and homeowners safely dispose of banned or unusable pesticides and mercury for free.
Acceptable items are pesticides, including insecticides, herbicides and fungicides, oil-based paint, drain cleaners, pool chemicals, household batteries, antifreeze and mercury.
Non-acceptable items include latex paint, tires, car batteries, motor oil, ammunition, explosives, biohazards like syringes and medical prescriptions. — J.E.B.

A safe environment
OWOSSO — Learn how to change the environment to meet the needs of people with dementia at a free educational program, “Safety and Environmental Issues,” Wednesday, March 19, from 2-4 p.m. at Oliver Woods, Bldg 3, 1310 W. Oliver St.
This program, given by the Alzheimer’s Association, also teaches how to accommodate sensory, physical and cognitive changes of those with memory impairment.

Mom to Mom sale
DAVISON — The First Baptist Church of Davison will host a Mom to Mom Sale April 5 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Check for colon cancer
LAPEER COUNTY — March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The Prevent Cancer Foundation partnered with Congress for this designation in 2000.
Health experts recommend people make an appointment with their physicians for a screening. After age 50, if test results are negative, people should get a screening at least once every five years. — J.E.B.

Teach kids social skills
LAPEER — Parents and teachers are invited to the Family Literacy Center’s free workshop on how to help children build social skills and succeed in everyday situations.
Last One Picked...First One Picked On is a DVD presentation by educator and administrator Richard Lavoie. It offers a greater understanding of social skill deficits and strategies for developing social competence.
Two sessions will be offered on Tuesday, March 18 at Mott College, Lapeer Campus, Room 204 at 12:30-2 p.m. and again from 6-7:30 p.m.

St. Paddy’s Dinner
MAYFIELD TWP. — VFW Post 4139 Ladies Auxiliary hosts a St. Patrick’s Day dinner on Friday, March 14 from 5-7 p.m. at 128 Daley Rd. Everyone is invited to enjoy corn beef and cabbage, carrots, red potatoes, coleslaw, a dinner roll and dessert for $7 a person. Details: 810-664-9222. — J.E.B.

ServSafe Training
LAPEER — ServSafe Training for managers is offered from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. March 17 and March 24 at the Lapeer County MSU Extension office, 287 W. Nepessing St.
Training topics include time and temperature in food handling, proper personal hygiene, cross-contamination, cleaning and sanitizing. Participants must attend both sessions. Cost is $200 and registration is required. Call 810-667-0341 for details, registration. — R.A.

Treat your treasures
FLINT — The Sloan Museum, in conjunction with its Treasure exhibit, will host “How to treasure your treasures,” on Saturday, March 29.
Workshop leaders will advise participants on preserving, storing and displaying family treasures. Museum professionals will demonstrate the best way to care for heirlooms. Attendees are welcome to bring their own objects. The program is free with museum admission. — J.F.

VNS offers health screenings
LAPEER COUNTY — Visiting Nurse Services of Michigan is offering cholesterol screenings for Lapeer area residents from 8:30-11 a.m. March 14 at the Lapeer Community Center, 880 S. Saginaw St.
Participants can have any of the following checked: total and HDL cholesterol levels and/or a full lipid profile, with or without glucose screening. A 12-hour fast is recommended but is not necessary. Fees range from $12 to $21, depending on the test. Details: 810-496-8755. — R.A.

Roast beef benefit at the Center Building
LAPEER — A roast beef dinner will be served Thursday, March 13, from 4-7 p.m. at the County Center Building, 425 County Center St.
Cost is $8 and funds will go toward building improvements. Advance tickets are preferred but can still be purchased at the door. Aside from the meal, there will be a 50-50 raffle and a door prize of two tickets for the next dinner. Details: 810-664-2109. — R.A.

Shamrocks rock
LAPEER COUNTY — Watch for shamrock fundraisers this month. Plunk down just a buck for a green shamrock, or spend $5 on a gold mobile to fund research, services and education by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. — J.E.B.
