Summer learning
LAPEER COUNTY — A summer learning program from the MSU Extension for children in K- second grade, takes place this summer in spots around the county.
The program helps young children maintain reading and math skills during the vacation. Each two-hour session includes an hour of one-on-one tutoring and an hour of 4-H Club Read Summer Fun activities. The cost is $8 per student for the entire program.
Adults and volunteers in grades 6 through 12 are invited to help for a few hours each week.
The following sessions take place soon:
• Lapeer East High School, Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 8-24, 9:30-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-2:30 p.m.
• North Branch Township Library: Fridays, July 11-Aug. 15, 9:30-11:30 a.m. or from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

ARP driver safety
LAPEER — Don Morris will teach a two-day driver safety course on Monday, July 21, and Tuesday, July 22, noon-4 p.m. each day at the Lapeer Senior Center (Annex). Cost: $10, check payable to AARP. Ask your insurance company if a rate discount can be earned for successful completion of this class.

Library fun
METAMORA — The Metamora branch of the Lapeer District Library will host a free PACT (Parents and Children Together) part 1 for first and second graders and a parent/caregiver on Wednesday, July 9, from 2-3:30 p.m.
Children and caregiver play reading games together, enjoy a story and snack, and get to take home a free book. Siblings are welcome. Metamora’s library is at 4018 Oak St.

Golf scrambles for PAR
LAPEER — A scrambles golf outing Friday, July 18, at the Lapeer Country Club will benefit Paradise Animal Rescue. Shotgun start, 10 a.m. Entry fee: $80 a person, or $300 for a four-member team. This includes golf, a cart, a hot dog at the turn and a steak dinner afterward. Contest prizes, raffles and 50/50 drawings. Sponsor a golf hole for $50 or a cart for $15. Entry forms due July 10. USS McKinley
LAPEER— The USS Mount McKinley Association will be host a reunion in Reno, Nev., Sept. 7-11. The reunion is for veterans of all branches of the military that served on the amphibious force flagship USS Mount McKinley AGC/LCC-7 anytime during her 26 years of commissioned service. LAPEER — Got any railroad spikes lying around your property? Consider giving them to the Lapeer County Historical Society. Cal Provins, a board trustee, and his wife Ardy convert them to gift items for the museum to sell.
